NADPH-dependent glutathione peroxidase-like proteins (Gpx-1, Gpx-2) reduce unsaturated fatty acid hydroperoxides in Synechocystis PCC 6803.

Here we isolated and characterized two genes (slr1171, slr1992) designated gpx-1 and gpx-2, respectively, encoding glutathione peroxidase (GPX)-like proteins (Gpx-1, Gpx-2) from Synechocystis PCC 6803. The deduced amino acid sequences for gpx-1 and gpx-2 showed high similarity to those of GPX-like proteins from higher plants and mammalian GPXs, respectively. Surprisingly, both recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli were able to utilize NADPH, but not reduced glutathione, as an electron donor and unsaturated fatty acid hydroperoxides or alkyl hydroperoxides as an acceptor. It seems accurate to refer to Gpx-1 and Gpx-2 as NADPH-dependent GPX-like proteins that serve as a new defense system for the reduction of unsaturated fatty acid hydroperoxides.

Microalgae and wastewater treatment.

The performance of microalgae aquaculture wastewater treatment system predominated mainly by Scenedesmus and Chlorella was assessed. Treatment induced a progressive reduction in both COD and BOD to values below the discharge limits. Different patterns were obtained for removal of phosphorus, nitrogen, and ammonia; however, the algal culture efficiencies reached 100% in their removal by the end of the treatment period. The applied aquatic systems demonstrated percentage reduction of heavy metals in the range between 52.3 and 100% in the batch system and 64.2 and 100% in the continuous system. Wastewater supported algal growth by inducing the incorporation of a significantly higher content of the individual amino acids Asp, Thr, Ser, Glu, Gly, and Tyr, and a markedly higher level of Pro. However, His, Lys, and Arg were markedly reduced compared to their levels in synthetic-medium-grown algae.

Intramuscular sulbactam/ampicillin combination therapy in gynaecological and obstetric bacterial infections.

Estimates were carried out on the clinical and bacteriological efficacy of an intramuscular combination of sulbactam/ampicillin, together with an assessment of its tolerability and safety in the treatment of gynaecological and obstetric infections. A total of 30 women with pelvic inflammatory disease, wound infections, vaginitis and puerperal sepsis received an intramuscular combination of sulbactam/ampicillin in a total daily dose of 1.5 g for between 3 and 7 days. Clinical cure and improvement were achieved in 27 (90%) cases but there was no response in three (10%) cases. No side-effects were seen in 29 (97%) cases, whereas tolerable local injection site pain was reported in one case. The safety of the sulbactam/ampicillin antibiotic combination was evident in all the cases studied, as there was no significant difference between the means of laboratory tests before and after therapy of blood and renal measures.

The next step in the certification process: a challenge for the gastroenterology nurse and associate.

The achievement of specialty certification requires time, effort and commitment on the part of the candidate. Recognizing the expanded role of the gastroenterology nurse and associate has led to validation of the expertise and specialized knowledge by means of the two-discipline examinations. To the specialist the process of certification provides self-assessment and an ongoing mechanism for evaluation and accountability. Individuals have expressed the personal satisfaction in the achievement, the peer recognition and advanced career opportunities that certification has provided them.

A new transrectal pull-through operation for high anorectal anomalies.

Twenty-five cases of high anorectal anomalies were treated by a modified transrectal pull-through operation. All patients underwent diverting colostomy before definitive surgery, through which a balloon was passed into the blind rectal pouch. EMG studies were done at the site of the external sphincter in response to gradual inflation of the balloon. There was typical behavior both before and after surgery, except in two cases with sacral anomalies. These findings indicate the importance of a sensitive mucosa in the rectal pouch and of a functioning external sphincter. A modification of the pull-through technique in which a window of intact mucosa is left in situ to preserve sensation was employed in five cases and is expected to provide improved continence.

Preliminary investigation of bilharzial patients for the presence of Australia antigen using latex agglutination test.

THE AUSTRALIA antigen was studied by the use of a reversed passive latex agglutination test in the sera of 250 cases, mostly bilharzial. The results were analysed in relation to age, clinical presentation, bilharzial infestation, antibilharzial treatment, jaundice and serum bilirubin. It was found that, the test was significantly more positive in hepatosplenic cases, in those with past history of bilharziasis, in those with jaundice and in those with higher serum bilirubin level. While no significant difference was found in relation to age, and to history of antibilharzial treatment.
