[Quantitative technics in ultrasonic diagnosis].

This paper presents techniques for computer-aided analysis of medical ultrasonic images. Methods of image processing, feature extraction and a classification algorithm for tissue characterization are described. Based on these techniques a pattern recognition system for semi-automatic analysis of ultrasonic images has been developed and proved within three clinical studies, which aimed to improve the ultrasound diagnosis of the prostate, the thyroid and the female breast. The results show that computer analysis of ultrasonic images is capable of providing a quantitative diagnosis as well as of differentiating tumor lesions by sonography.

Breast Neoplasms

[Improved diagnostic evaluation of prostatic neoplasms using radioimmunoassay for prostatic acid phosphatase].

Better diagnosis of prostatic cancer by RIA of serum prostatic acid phosphatase? The results of serum determination of RIA prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) and enzymatic serum phosphatase were compared in 267 patients with the clinical diagnosis to reveal the diagnostic value of the RIA-PAP in prostatic carcinomata. In 33 of the investigated patients (12.4%) we found elevated values of the PAP over the normal range of 0--5 ng/ml. In these 33 patients with pathologic PAP-values those with adenomata and in adenomata intracapsulated prostatic cancers had normal serum values measured enzymatically. There was no correlation between PAP-RIA results and the stage of the prostatic carcinoma. In nearly 20% we found better information by RIA-PAP than enzymatic laboratory tests, but combined with a digital investigation.

Acid Phosphatase

Technological state of the art, possibilities and trends in urologic-endoscopic color photo, film and video recording techniques.

Endoscopic color photo-documentation has attained a high standard of sophistication through pioneering new technical developments and advances. Nearly all the cavities in the human body can be endoscopically explored by expediently combining appropriate equipment. Suitable endo-instruments for photography, film, and color video are discussed here on the basis of extensive experience at the German Diagnostic Clinic in Wiesbaden. The trand is clearly toward modern methods of magnetic tape recording employing compatible systems. A bright future is predicted for the color video process in medicine, especially in endoscopy.

Recognition of the pattern in ultrasonic sectional pictures of the prostate for tumor diagnosis.

To diagnose tumorous alterations of the prostate, we examined the organ with ultrasonics by scanning directly from the abdominal wall through the filled bladder (transvesical). The research is aimed at: 1) improvement and mathematical preparation of the ultrasonic pictures to assist the physician in his diagnosis. 2) ascertainment of significant parameters which allow the classes "normal prostate", "adenoma" and "carcinoma" to be distinguished in screening examinations. The results show that with ultrasonics, adenomas and carcinomas are recognizable in 96% of the examined patients and can be differentiated from normal prostate tissue. The palpation finding was used as a reference in most cases.

Humans

[Ultrasonic examination of the prostate, with rating apparatus for tumor recognition (author's transl)].

UNLABELLED: The prostate was examined by ultrasonic waves to diagnose tumorous changes of the organ. We scanned directly from the abdominal wall through the full bladder (transvesical). The classification of the resulting B-pictures is based on patterns that are specific for normal, adenomatous, or cancerous tissue. The results show that adenomas and carcinomas are recognizable in 85% of the examined patients by ultrasonic waves and can be differentiated from normal prostate tissue.
