Primary ciliary dyskinesia is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by total or partial dysfunction of the ciliary or flagellated cells. It is clinically expressed by sinusitis and/or bronchiectasis occasionally associated with sterility in males. We report three cases of immotile cilia syndrome with chronic respiratory symptoms (sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis). The syndrome was associated with bronchiectasis in two cases and by half lobe atelectasis in the third. Diagnosis was established by ultrastructural study of samples from the nasal mucosa, in which the absence of the dynein arms and/or the anomalous disposition of the microtubules was observed. In all three patients great clinical improvement and symptom control were achieved, thereby improving the prognosis of these children. Although the syndrome cannot be cured, as in other chronic pneumopathies, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can considerably reduce morbidity.
Bilateral hypogastric artery ligation is a technique described in the antiquity to restrain the hemorrhage in the gynecological and obstetric surgery. There are few Gineco-obstetricians that dominate the technique, for what intended a training program, in which was to demonstrate their security and effectiveness. We carry out a program where were qualified 14 gineco-obstetricians, theoretical and surgically. Results were analyzed finding an acceptable security with 1.5% of complications and an effectiveness demonstrated when having to the program 92.9% of students that reached the competition. We intend to reply the course in other hospital units, in order to decrease the maternal mortality for hemorrhage obstetric or gynecological.

A description is given of four patients with the diagnosis of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) who developed articular manifestations during the clinical course. One of the patients developed advanced lesions of scleroderma. The rheumatologic changes of the disease as well as other affections of organs, complications and prophylaxis are reviewed.
We study the effectivity and tolerance of synthetic salmon calcitonin nasally administered (Miacalcic) in the treatment of established postmenopausic osteoporosis. During one year, two randomized groups of postmenopausic women diagnosed of osteoporosis were treated in an outpatient service either with 1 gr of calcium element per day during the whole study or with 100 daily I.U. of salmon synthetic calcitonin nasally administered in patterns of 14 days and the same period of rest, plus a supplement of 500 mgr of calcium element per day. Globally, 43 patients were assessed at the end of the study in the calcitonin plus calcium group and 45 in the group receiving only calcium. The main evaluation parameters were pain and presence of new fractures. At the beginning and at the end of the study, complementary tests of blood biochemistry were conducted, including alkalin phosphatase, calcium, phosphorus and uric acid, as well as calcium, hydroxiprolin and creatinini in the urine. The results showed a significant improvement of pain (p < 0.001) in the group treated with calcitonin, supported by a lower consumption of analgesics. The rate of vertebral fractures determined according to the Meunier's index, was also significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the group treated with calcitonin at the end of the study period. These results suggest that, compared to only calcium, nasally administered calcitonin precludes the formation of new vertebral fractures during one year of treatment and it is effective in terms of pain reduction.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

We studied the relationship between 2 types of psychosocial factors, life events and chronic stress, and the numerical order of the depressive episodes. The population studied consisted of 97 subjects suffering from major depressive disorder and 65 controls. Life events occurred with the first 2 depressive episodes with significantly higher frequency than with later episodes or with the control group. Patients in the third or later episode had no more life events than controls. No significant differences were apparent in the incidence of chronic stress in the different depressive episodes of the patient group or in the comparison of this group with controls. No second order interaction between life events and chronic stress was found.
Adult rhabdomyoma is a rare neoplasm of mesenchymal origin which represents approximately 2% of tumors with skeletal muscle differentiation. There are only about 100 cases reported in the literature. It is a benign tumor occurring most frequently in the head and neck region, which affects predominantly male population of a mean age ranging from 54 to 60. The purpose of this article is to present a new case of adult rhabdomyoma located in the masticatory area, arising as a slow-growing mass bulging in the left-side jugal mucosa and temporal region. The most common location for adult rhabdomyoma is the pharyngeal cavity. This type of tumor appears as a solitary mass, though occasionally may be multifocal. This tumor being of low occurrence, correct diagnosis can prevent aggressive surgery.
Global outcome of 94 drug abusers who began treatment in a Mental Health Center is studied in a six month follow-up. Drug use, medical, familial, occupational, legal and psychological status related with drug addiction are also analyzed. In the follow-up 90.4% patients were located, and the outcome was good in drug abuse, medical and familial areas. According to Global Outcome Scale, 36% scored high (optimal or good outcome) and 33% scored low (poor or very poor outcome).
