Total dietary restriction and thymus, spleen, and phenotype and function of splenocytes in growing mice.

To study the immunological effect of total dietary restriction, BALB/c mice were limited to reduced body growth or maintained at practically constant body weight between 21 and 61 days of age by giving them 70% (R70%) or 55% (R55%) of the average daily food intake of the control group fed ad libitum. Thymus and spleen weight were decreased, but thymus size was maintained in proportion to body weight in R70% mice, whereas the ratio of thymus weight to body weight was significantly decreased in R55% mice. In restricted mice, splenocytes showed a lower percentage of B lymphocytes and a higher percentage of T lymphocytes. Results of stimulation showed that proliferation capacity was increased for B lymphocytes and decreased for T lymphocytes in restricted mice. Our data show the importance of studying the thymus over a period, because normal thymus growth was first greatly impaired by dietary restriction, and subsequent thymus involution was delayed, showing that an isolated comparison between the thymus of growing mice is not enough. Our data show the interest of determining the percentage of lymphocyte populations parallel to their response to mitogen stimulation.

[Comparative results of total detections and detection in a group of patients with high risk for tuberculosis in an urban environment].

In the territory of 5 anti-TBC dispensaries in the area of Bucharest 2 circumscriptions have been selected at random in which radiophotographic detection was to be carried out integrally and 2 other circumscriptions were selected for the investigation of groups at high risk of developing tuberculosis. All the new cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis that have been recorded, through all the methods in these 20 circumscriptions in 1973 were analized retrospectively and the reasons appeared that had determined their existence was mentioned or was ommitted on the occasion of previous investigations. These reasons were correlated with the data concerning the method for detection that had been employed, according to the indications of the tuberculosis dispensaries. In view of the evaluation of the degree of real covering of the population in integral rf investigations, the team of the Institute of Phtysiology investigated representative lots of population from each dispensary and checked the catagraphy of the population in the field, house-by-house. It was noted that 20--21% of the subjects that had been programmed for the integral rf examination (according to catagraphic criteria) were absent when the checking in the field, that should have been programmed, were not included in the catagraphy. On the basis of this study the methodology for radiophotographic detection for groups with risk of developing tuberculosis was established.

[Indices of detection in integral radiophotographic examinations in rural areas].

Integral radiophotographic detection was carried out in the territories of 5 randomly selected village dispensaries in 5 different counties. The action was performed in strictly operational conditions, without external experimental interferences. Stress was laid on the strict following of the methodological letter concerning radiophotography. The performing of integral radiophotographic detection in strictly operational conditions in the rural environment demonstrated the utility of these examinations in the present stage. The output obtained can be considered as satisfactory; local variations can be noted and this indicates the possibility of differentiating the conduct in various geographical areas.

[Failures of standardized treatments in pulmonary tuberculosis. Possibilities of prevention and therapeutic recovery].

In view of a better knowledge of therapeutic failures in operational conditions four groups of patients were analyzed, which included a total of 1511 patients, both new cases and patients re-admitted for tuberculosis of the pulmonary apparatus, that had been treated according to standardized regimens. In three of these groups failures had been recorded at a rate of 3,9% intra-therapeutic failures and 7,6% post-therapeutic ones in the first 18 months after completing the therapy. Out of the four groups a lot was selected, which included 127 cases of therapy failure. This lot was studied under the aspect of causes of the failure and of the possibilities for recovery. The major causes of the failure were non-cooperation of patients (in 48% of the cases), the initial severity of the lesions, associated diseases, the re-admittance, the secondary resistance. Recovery of the intra-therapeutic failures was possible in 46% of the cases, and of patients with post-therapeutic failure in 72% of the cases. On the basis of an analysis of risk factors a series of proposals are made for preventing such failures.
