Project Head Start. An evaluation of the medical components in California.

Half of 1,135 children medically examined as a part of Project Head Start in California had one or more conditions that warranted referral to a physician or dentist, and only one-fifth of these were under care. In the judgment of the examining physicians, one-third of the referable medical conditions were described as "major." Follow-up procedures were variable and not very successful. Increased local medical society participation in planning the health services for these children is recommended as an especially important step in securing care for the problems that are identified.

Hemolytic disease of the newborn. Review of deaths in California.

In order to find ways to decrease mortality from hemolytic disease of the newborn, a study was undertaken by physicians of the California Medical Association in cooperation with the California State Department of Public Health. Neonatal deaths during a two and a half year period were investigated and analyzed by review committees with the view of evaluating presumed deficiencies in management. The findings indicate that proper prenatal prediction and preparation by the physician for the management of HDN calls for earlier and more comprehensive use of warning signals, as well as a constant reappraisal of current technology. New advances in the management of HDN require increasingly close cooperation between patients, their physicians and consultants.

[Short-term effects of gamma-globulins on sleep organization in epileptic patients (author's transl)].

A study of the effect of gamma-globulins on sleep was conducted in 8 patients aged 1 to 35 years with epilepsy not responding to any of the conventional treatments. Two polygraphic recordings were carried out during the 4th and 5th nights following a placebo injection and then an injection of gamma-globulin 16 Merieux (1 ml/kg). The short-term effects of the gamma-globulins were : --reduction in percentage of paroxysms, --an acceleration in the electroencephalographic tracings of the different stages of sleep and those of the waking period, --a statistically significant increase in the percentage of paradoxical sleep, though the general organization of sleep remained unchanged.

Study of anatomical bases of a latero-dorsal flap of the forearm preserving the radial artery.

The authors studied the dorso-lateral cutaneous branches of the radial artery in 26 forearms of fresh cadavers following injection of latex. Three to eight branches were identified, with frequent anastomoses. Extensive venous drainage was also observed. One to three cutaneous branches arose within a 3-cm region close to the radial styloid precess. This provides a basis for an island flap supplied by these branches and thus, it is possible to maintain the radial artery intact.
