[Emerging pathologies and correlates of drug abuse in 2 therapeutic communities in Bergamo].

The authors monitored for 1 year 96 cases of ex-opiate addicts, belonging to two therapeutic Communities from Bergamo, a male and a female group, and a group of subjects living close to them (operators) or relatives and of laboratory technicians (51 cases on the whole). Protocols were set up with all the biochemical, hematological and serological parameters, to study the alterations connected with possible pathologies related to drug addiction, with repeated controls during the observation year. Only one LAS case was pointed out, at present markedly improved, a high incidence of hepatic involvement, due to previous hepatitis (type B or non A and non B), no alterations of kidney functions, while alterations of lymphocyte populations and subsets, thrombocytopenia, cross reactions with VDRL and negative TPHA, 45% of anti HTLV III antibody positive cases, were pointed out. Concerning the technicians and people living close to the examined subjects, no positivity for anti-HTLV III antibody, due to horizontal transmission of infection, was observed.

[Management of data in the microbiological laboratory. Experience with the Olivetti TES 501 system].

The Authors note their experience of dealing with data in a microbiology laboratory using the Olivetti TES 501 system. This system permits a rational organisation of the work programme, from writing out the work sheets, simultaneous type-out of results, filing, to the possibility of rapid consultation of records, etc. According to the Authors, however, its most important function is the possibility of being able to obtain the read-out of the infective position of each ward in the hospital very easily and rapidly, which makes it possible to adopt an effective antibiotic policy.

[Isolation and serotyping of Streptococcus pneumoniae].

87 strains of Str. pneumoniae were typed by serology and a chemoantibiotic resistance assay was made. Among them, the most frequent serological types are 4, 6, 7, 19, 33. None of these has shown a marked chemoantibiotic resistance and no prevalent resistance has been related to a particular specimen.

[Comparison between similar antibiotypes isolated in high infection risk wards and in general medical departments. Preliminary investigation (author's transl)].

From the comparison between antibiograms of bacterial species isolated from biological materials of wards with a high infection risk (General Intensive Care Unit and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit) and wards for internal diseases (General Medicine and Paediatric Wards), the AA. met with a very high frequency of bacterial species with identical sensitivity to antibiotics in the General Intensive Care Unit and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit. The data reported indicates a high cross-infection risk in the above Wards.
