The psychosocial impact of psoriasis: physical severity, quality of life, and stigmatization.

Men (N=58) and women (N=43) living with psoriasis completed questionnaires assessing quality of life and feelings of stigmatization. Physician ratings of disease severity were used in conjunction with these variables to account for psychosocial impact. Results showed that ratings of severity were poor predictors of quality of life and stigmatization. Demographic variables (e.g., sex and education) were also generally poor predictors of psychosocial outcome. It is concluded that attempts to understand the psychological impact of psoriasis in terms of current measures of disease severity and demographic characteristics will be limited.

The size of the visual size cue used for programming manipulative forces during precision grip.

We used a perturbation technique to quantify the contribution of visual size cues to the programming of target force when lifting an object. Our results indicate that the nervous system attaches a reasonable weight to visual size cues when programming the target grip force for a novel object. In a subsequent lift of the same object, however, the confidence attached to the visual size cue fell dramatically. It is not clear whether the decrease in the use of size information was accelerated by the presence of a cue conflict or whether the fall represents the normal shift towards the use of a memory-based representation for programming grip force. In a second experiment, we used the "size-weight illusion" to explore the relationship between the verbal report of an object's weight and the programming of the grip and load force. We found that erroneous motor programming (as indexed by a number of measures) was neither necessary nor sufficient for the size-weight illusion to occur. These findings call for a re-evaluation of a previous explanation for the size-weight illusion. We suggest that the illusion arises because the cognitive system attempts to rationalise the fact that objects of apparently equal density but different size feel as if they have the same weight.

Giant cell tumor of tendon sheath.

The giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (localized nodular tenosynovitis) is the second most common tumor involving the hand but is only rarely reported in the dermatologic literature. A case of giant cell tumor and a review of the clinical and pathologic records of 111 patients are discussed.

Ammonium inhibits processing and cytotoxicity of reovirus, a nonenveloped virus.

Successful viral infection involves a series of interactions between the virus and the host cell. The outcome of viral infection is, in fact, dependent on intact cellular function; it is required for viral binding, internalization, and uncoating. To determine the potential importance of lysosomal processing on the outcome of infection with a nonenveloped virus, we have studied the effects of NH4Cl on the course of reovirus infection on a beta-cell tumor in culture. Addition of 10 mM NH4C1 to the medium inhibited viral growth by greater than 80% and reduced toxic effects of the virus on cell viability, protein, and DNA synthesis by 30-45%. In addition, synthesis of viral proteins was markedly decreased. Uptake of virus prelabeled with [35S]methionine was not affected by the ammonium; however, cleavage of mu1C, an outer capsid protein of the virus whose cleavage appears to be required for viral replication, was delayed. These results suggest that intracellular processing of reovirus is dependent on a lysosomal pathway and that disruption of this pathway can alter the course of viral infection.

Histiocytosis X in two adults. Treatment with topical mechlorethamine.

Two adult patients with skin lesions typical of histiocytosis X were treated topically with mechlorethamine hydrochloride. In the patient whose disease was limited to the skin, a sustained remission was induced, but in the patient with extensive systemic disease, cutaneous remission lasted only six weeks.

Genital ulceration due to Stoddard solvent.

Five cases of ulcerative and erythematous lesions on the genitals and buttocks which occurred among workers whose coveralls had been dry-cleaned using Stoddard solvent are presented. A typical clinical picture and investigative results were consistent with irritant contact dermatitis. The literature on the two most commonly used dry-cleaning fluids is reviewed. The hazards of dry-cleaning chemicals, both for workers in dry-cleaning shops and for their clients who wear the cleaned clothes, are outlined. Suggestions pertaining to the avoidance of cutaneous reactions are detailed.
