Chronic hypervitaminosis D3 determines a decrease in C-cell numbers and calcitonin levels in rats.

Many papers have reported that chronic hypercalcemia induced either by large doses of vitamin D or by the administration of calcium or parathormone, produces hypertrophy and hyperplasia of C cells. However, more recent studies suggest that the effect of elevated calcium or 1.25(OH)2D3 concentration on the production of calcitonin may be more complex than previously suspected. To assess the validity of such a response an experimental model, where hypercalcemia was induced with vitamin D3 overdose, was designed. Male Wistar rats were administered vitamin D3 chronically (50,000 IU per 100 ml of drinking water with or without CaCl2). Serum calcium and calcitonin levels were determined. C cells were stained by immunohistochemistry using calcitonin and neuronal specific enolase (NSE) antibodies and their percentage was calculated by a morphometric analysis. We also investigated the ultrastructural characteristic of the C cells under experimental conditions. C cells did not have a proliferative response rather a decrease in their number was observed after 1 month of treatment with 25,000 IU of vitamin D3 (1.55 vs 2.43% in control animals) and 3 months with vitamin plus CaCl2 (2.27% vs 3.62% in control animals). In addition, no significant changes in serum calcitonin levels were observed during the experimental period. We conclude that rat C cells do not respond with hypertrophic and hyperplastic changes in a hypercalcemic state due to an intoxication with vitamin D3.

[Pharmaceutical marketers: professional and informative aspects].

This study tries to know the opinion of pharmaceutical detailers about their profession, as well as their pharmacological knowledge. 75 questionnaires were distributed to an equal number of detailers. The questionnaires were composed of two parts. In the first one, several questions about their profession were posed. In the second one, the questions were about Pharmacology. The main results were that most of them have got only lower degrees; however, they all have carried out training courses in their companies. With regard to pharmacological questions, percentage of success was 61%.

Drug Industry

[Pharmacological knowledge among general physicians].

We inquired to 200 physicians about the 50 pharmaceutical products most dispensed in Seville during 1989. The most significative results were: 68.5% of the inquired answered the questionnaire. 98.5% knew the product, but only 80.3% prescribed it. The principal sources of information to know the drug were books and scientific journals (67.3%), followed by detailers (62%). 86.1% knew the composition of the product, and 94.9% knew its indications. 71.5% described the side effects, 66.4% the contraindications, and 25.5% the interactions with other drugs. Only 56.9% mentioned a therapeutic alternative.

Clinical Competence

The effect of HeNe laser radiation on the thyroid gland of the rat.

Although laser irradiation is becoming common practice in medicine, there is not always a clear understanding of the possible side-effects. The present report is a light and electron microscopic study of the effects of fixed low intensity doses of soft HeNe laser on the thyroid of Wistar rats. The immediate effects are mild multifocal degenerative changes; these lesions recover in less than 3 months. Long-term lesions are identified only by electron microscopy; they consist of an increased number of peroxisomes and free or intramitochondrial crystalline structures. We discuss the laser's hypothetical functions.

Animals

A morphometric study of the secretory granules of the granular duct in the submaxillary gland of the rat following stimulation with noradrenaline and isoproterenol.

In the present work, we carry out a morphometric analysis, at ultrastructural level, of the secretory granules of the granular undulated duct of the submaxillary gland of the rat, under basal conditions (Control Group or I), following stimulation for 10 minutes with 2 mg/100 g weight of Isoproterenol (Group II), and following stimulation with 2 gammas/100 g weight of Noradrenalin for the same time as in the former case. It is seen that in general, Noradrenalin produces the appearance of a greater number of small granules than does Isoproterenol or the control group; and that Isoproterenol induces the presence of larger-sized granules than does Noradrenalin.

Animals

Pulmonary vein myxoid leiomyosarcoma.

A case of myxoid leiomyosarcoma located in the right pulmonary veins is presented. The patient complained of progressive dyspnea, orthopnea, sputum cruentum and right chest pain. Angiography revealed an obliteration of right pulmonary veins by a tumor mass that expanded into the left atrium. Histologically, the lesion contained densely packed fusiform cell areas that alternated with other much less cellular and richer in interstitial myxoid matrix. The tumor cells showed specific immunoreactivity to desmin antibodies and contained abundant thin filaments with focal densities and micropinocytic vesicles.

Effect of low-dose aspirin treatment on human platelet aggregation.

1. The effect of aspirin 50 mg/day during 28 days on human platelet aggregation (PAG) induced by ADP and collagen has been studied in 12 healthy volunteers. 2. The results show that aspirin treatment reduces both ADP and collagen-induced PAG (P less than 0.01). 3. Maximal inhibition of PAG appears in the second week of treatment for ADP-induced PAG (41.1%) and in the fourth week for collagen-induced PAG (50.2%). No significant differences exist between the controls taken along the treatment during the 28 days of the study. 4. The data suggest that the low-dose of aspirin tested provides adequate PAG inhibition to be used in the prophylaxis of thromboembolism patients, thus avoiding intolerances to higher dosages.

Adenosine Diphosphate

[Study of isochromosomes of the long arms of the X chromosome].

A clinical and cytogenetic study of 10 patients with chromosome formula of isochromosome in the long arms of the X in all the cells or in a mosaic with another cell line is made. Cases os isochromosomes, so far reported, differentiating them into monocentric and dicentric, after applying techniques of C-banding to them, have been review. Finally a clinical study of the cases 46,Xi (Xq) is made.

Chromosome Banding

Partial trisomy for the long arm of chromosome 7. Case report and review.

We reviewed partial trisomy of the long arm of chromosome 7 after a new case was brought to our attention. The clinical differences between the various types of trisomies 7q were evaluated by statistical analysis, and three groups were defined. These groups correspond to the segments q22 or q21 leads to q31, q31 leads to qter, and q32 leads to qter, and would seem to represent three different syndromes, of which one is more serious than the other two.

Chromosomes, Human, 6-12 and X

Partial trisomy of chromosome 18 (pter leads to q11): a discussion on the identification of the critical segment.

Partial trisomy for the short arm and the proximal region of the long arm of chromosome 18 was observed in a male child of 4 years of age. The trisomy appeared de novo as a free, practically metacentric chromosome. A review of other cases of partial trisomy 18 suggests that there is a critical segment of the chromosome responsible for typical phenotype of the trisomy 18. In this report we add the description of a new case to the work already carried out in the delimitation of this critical segment.

Abnormalities, Multiple

Trisomy 13 in a 4-year-old child.

The karyotype 47,XY,13+ was observed in a mentally retarded four-year-old child, with numerous abnormalities and the typical dermatoglyphics of a trisomy 13. Banding analysis showed a complete extra chromosome 13.

Abnormalities, Multiple

[Ring chromosome 13 (author's transl)].

A ring for chromosome 13 with loss of the bands p12 and q34, is reported in a person with clinical features characteristic of the loss of these specific segments.

Chromosome Aberrations

[Mitochondrial disease due to the deficit of Q-cytochrome C oxidoreductase coenzyme in the respiratory chain. Report of a new case].

Reference has been made in the literature of the variability in the clinical presentation of deficiency of complex III of the respiratory chain, identifying up to the moment, four groups, the first of which is characterized by hipotonia and wearness starting at variable ages. We report a new case of mitochondrial myopathy due to deficiency of this complex and included within this first group, and consider the importance of defining the clinical and histochemical characteristics of this polymorphous entity.
