(+)-Apollineanin: a new flavanone from Tephrosia apollinea.

Chemical investigation of the leaves of Tephrosia apollinea has yielded a new flavanone named (+)-apollineanin, together with two known flavones: (-)-semiglabrin and (-)-semiglabrinol. The structure of the new compound was determined on the basis of mass, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopies including NOE difference spectroscopy. The absolute stereochemistry of (+)-apollineanin was determined by Mosher ester methodology and from CD data.

Beddomeilactone: a new triterpene from Dysoxylum beddomei.

An investigation of the leaves of Dysoxylum beddomei has yielded a novel triterpene, named beddomeilactone, together with six known triterpenoids: 3-oxotirucalla-7,24-dien-23-ol, dipterocarpol, niloticin, melianone, melianodiol and 24-epi-melianodiol. The structure and stereochemistry of the new compound were determined on the basis of mass, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopies including NOE difference and spin-spin decoupling studies.

Cardiobutanolide, a styryllactone from Goniothalamus cardiopetalus.

A styryllactone namely cardiobutanolide was isolated from the stem bark of Goniothalamus cardiopetalus together with four known styryllactones goniothalamin, goniodiol, goniofufurone, goniofupyrone and known acetogenins squamocin and an epimeric mixture of goniodonin and 34-epi-goniodonin. The structure of the new compound was elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR experiments and mass spectroscopic techniques.

Triterpenoids from Dysoxylum malabaricum.

Two triterpenes 21R,23R-epoxy-21alpha-ethoxy-24S,25-dihydroxyapotirucall-7-en-3-one and 24R-acetoxy-3beta,25-dihydroxycycloartane were isolated from the leaves of Dysoxylum malabaricum together with eight known compounds lupeone, lupeol. sitosterol, dipterocarpol, cycloart-25-ene-3beta,24-diol, 24R,25-dihydroxycycloartan-3-one, 3beta,24R,25-trihydroxycycloartane and ergosta-5,24(24(1))-diene-3beta,4beta,20S-triol. The complete 1H and 13C NMR spectral assignment of the new apotirucallene triterpenoid has been achieved by 1H-1H COSY, HMQC and HMBC experiments.

Biological activities of Annona glabra.

On a preliminary screening, substantial antimicrobial, antifungal and moderate insecticidal, sporicidal and cytotoxic activities were observed for the hexane extract of the stem bark of Amona glabra L. Chromatographic fractionation of this extract led to the isolation of kaur-16-en-19-oic acid in a large amount as the main constituent, which was found to be largely responsible for the biological activities possessed by the crude extract.

Anthelmintics↗

Antibacterial, antifungal and anthelmintic activities of root barks of Uvaria hookeri and Uvaria narum.

On a pharmacological screening, substantial antibacterial, antifungal and anthelmintic activities were observed for the hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of the root barks of Uvaria narum Wall. and Uvaria hookeri King. Chromatographic fractionation of these extracts led to the isolation of the triterpenes glutinol, glutinone, taraxerol, beta-sitosterol and Annonaceous acetogenins uvariamicins-I, II and III mixture, isodesacetyluvaricin, squamocin-28-one, narumicins-I and II stereoisomeric mixture, squamocin and panalicin. The acetogenins exhibited antimicrobial and anthelmintic activities in their individual screening comparable with standard drugs and hence their presence could be attributed to a great extent for the biocidal properties of U. narum and U. hookeri extracts.
