Controlled neuropsychological investigation of patients with neurotic excoriations.

On the basis of preliminary empirical findings and the pertinent neuropsychological literature the following hypothese are put forward: (1) Because of a certain amount of abreaction (scratching), patients with neurotic excoriations will obtain higher scores in tests of verbal learning and long-term memory than "common' neurotics but probably lower scores in such tests than a group of "normal' subjects. (2) Visual long-term memory is relatively impaired both in patients with neurotic excoriations and in "common' neurotics compared to a "normal' group. (3) Performances IQ for both patient groups mentioned will be relatively low compared to verbal IQ. - The first and second of these suppositions were confirmed but not the third.

Controlled electroencephalographic investigation of patients with neurotic excoriations.

Because of the self-destructive character of neurotic excoriations (n.ex.), it is probable that relatively unmasked aggression plays a greater role than in 'normal' neurotics. In this investigation EEG abnormalities have been found for 51.9% of a group of 54 consecutive patients with n.ex. as against an abnormality frequency of 25% in a control group of neurotics without n.ex. The frequency of abnormalities in the n.ex. group is of the same level as for aggressive psychopaths, a finding which supports the above-mentioned hypothesis. In the majority of cases these abnormalities took the form of unspecific changes mainly showing bilateral theta activity. The basis of the registered left-sided preponderance of EEG abnormalities is discussed.

Folate status during long-term therapy with trimethoprim and sulphadiazine.

It was studied whether treatment with sulphadiazine and trimethoprim for 8 weeks affected the folate status. The therapy did not inhibit the absorption as assessed by the 3H--folic acid absorption (TRIFA) test. Plasma folic acid clearance showed that folate deficiency had not developed. Bone marrow studies revealed that the antifolic action of the drugs did not manifest itself at the cellular level. The Lactobacillus casei method should not be employed in the determinations of the serum folate concentration during the treatment because therapeutic plasma concentrations of the two drugs inhibit the growth of the test bacteria.

HLA-antigens and psoriasiform napkin dermatitis.

HLA typing was performed in 14 patients with psoriasiform napkin dermatitis (PND). Only 2 patients carried one of the three antigens (HLA-B13, B17, Bw37) associated with psoriasis vulgaris. The frequency of these antigens in PND corresponds to that in healthy controls, but differs significantly (p less than 0.01) from that in a population of psoriatics. Our results indicate that patients with PND are not true psoriatics, and that PND and psoriasis are different etiological entities.

Reiter's disease and the histocompatibility antigen, HL-A 27.

HL-A27 were found in 31 of 48 patients with Reiter's disease (65%) as compared with 8% of 2 103 health controls. It is suggested that HL-A27 is closely related to the inheritance of a special immune response leading to an increased susceptibility to a special type of reactive arthritis which Reiter's disease has in common with ankylosing spondylitis and a certain type of psoriatic arthritis.
