[Bacterial flora in the appendix in rabbits with artificially induced acute appendicitis].

The authors present the results of bacteriological analysis of scrapings from the appendical mucosa of 24 rabbits with appendicitis induced by obstruction of the appendix lumen and of 5 rabbits with healthy appendices (controls). In dependence on the duration of inflammation, the recovery of aerobic bacteria was decreasing and that of anaerobic nonsporulating bacteria was increasing. In the group of anaerobic bacteria, gram-negative rods were predominant (number of isolated colonies: 2973 = 79.9%, variation range of occurrence: 10(5)-10(8) per 1 gram of material) with a remarkable prevalence of the genus Bacteroides and particularly of the species Bacteroides fragilis. Compared to the occurrence in appendices with inflammation, the recovery of bacteria in controls was minimal. The work served as model in studying pathogenesis of acute appendicitis in human medicine. (Tab. 3, Ref. 12.)

[Resistance of intestinal strains of Bacteroides to antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents].

Antibacterial therapy of anaerobic infections usually involves chemotherapy. The basis of therapy is assessment of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antibiotic or chemotherapeutic agents needed to eliminate the suspected causal agents of infection. The authors assessed MIC of 9 selected antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents (metronidazole, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, azlocillin, mezlocillin, cephoxitin, oxytetracycline, lincomycin, erythromycin) by the dilution method in blood agar in 157 strains of the most important types of the genus Bacteroides which were isolated in 1985-1989 from different clinical materials in Bratislava and in Halle (GDR). All tested strains were sensitive to metronidazole and chloramphenicol. Resistance to clindamycin was very rare. Strains resistant to azlocillin, mezlocillin and cephotoxin were more frequent. A high resistance to lincomycin, oxytetracycline and erythromycin was found. Difference in sensitivity of strains from the CSSR and GDR were slight. Similarly results of the present work differed little from those of previous work.

[The role of anaerobic non-sporulating bacteria in urinary tract infections].

In selected clinical departments the authors examined for the presence of aerobic bacterial flora 10,760 urine specimens. 3,460 specimens did not contain aerobic bacteria. These samples were examined for anaerobic bacteria. In 27 (0.8%) germs of anaerobic non-sporulating bacteria in monocultures were detected. The incidence of anaerobes correlated with the clinical picture of inflammations of the urinary pathways. Antibiotic therapy based on sensitivity tests was successful. The investigations provides evidence of the necessity of anaerobic examination of urine specimens in inflammations of the urinary pathways with an unknown aetiology.

Clinical significance of Bacteroidaceae.

Material from 50 patients with purulent otitis media was investigated. All patients had undergone surgical operation. The results indicate that anaerobic non spore-forming bacteria, especially gram-negative rods of the family Bacteroidaceae, may play an important role in the aetiology of purulent otitis media. In a further study, the pathogenicity of the isolated bacteria was investigated. For this purpose, guinea pigs were challenged by intramuscular injection of the organism. All of the isolated strains were sensitive to clindamycin.

Aerococcus viridans as a causative agent of infectious endocarditis.

Identification and properties of Aerococcus viridans isolated from the blood of a patient with infectious endocarditis are described. The role of this agent in the pathogenesis of this disease was demonstrated by repeated cultivations as well as by high titres of specific antibodies in the patient's serum. Pathogenicity of this strain for experimental animals was not demonstrated.
