[Activity of bovine colostral IgG in the human digestive tract].

The biological activity of cow IgG administered orally to 11 volunteers in the colostrum of cows vaccinated with Sh. sonnei was studied. At the same time the degree of immunologic protection was determined on the experimental model of pepsin fragments of this IgG active against Sh. sonnei. IgG, introduced orally, could be regularly found in gastric and intestinal juices, as well as in coprofiltrates. A decrease in the concentration of IgG and related antibodies was observed as this IgG moved down along the digestive tract: the maximum loss of biological activity occurred in the lower sections of the intestine. The products of pepsin hydrolysis of immune cow IgG ensure pronounced protection against Sh. sonnei. The preservation of the biological activity of IgG in the digestive secretions of adults receiving immune colostrum orally indicates the expediency of further studies in the field of passive enteral immunization for the prevention and treatment of acute intestinal diseases.

[Concentration and purification of the measles virus using a 2-phase system of water-soluble polymers].

A number of two-phase aqueous polymers based on dextran (mol. w. 500) and polyethylene glycol (mol. w. 1000, 4000, 6000) was studied. The two-step distribution of virus-containing tissue culture fluid in these systems was found to result in significant purification of measles virus from protein admixtures. The degree of virus purification was shown to depend on ratios of volumes and molecular weights of the polymers.

Dextrans

[Isolation and purification of lactoperoxidase from cow's milk].

A procedure is described for isolation and purification of lactoperoxidase from cow milk. The procedure involved the following steps: isolation of casein from milk, sorption of lactoperoxidase on CM-Sephadex, concentration of the eluate using ultrafiltration, salting out with ammonium sulfate; isoelectric focusing was carried out in the borate-polyol system. Highly purified, active preparation of lactoperoxidase was obtained within a relatively short period by means of the procedure, where the available reagents were used.

[Use of a 2-phase system of water-soluble polymers to concentrate measles and mumps virus].

The possibility of using two-phase systems of water-soluble polymers, polyethylene glycol (PEG) (molecular weight 6000 daltons), dextran sulphate (DS) (molecular weight 500,000 daltons), PEG- dextran (D) (molecular weight 500,000 daltons) for concentration of measles and parotitis viruses was studied. Virus concentration was found to occur in the interphase and lower phase, and the coefficient of concentration for both viruses to be 300 in the PEG-DS system and 60-100 in PEG-D system.

Dextran Sulfate

[The use of saliva for study in the immunoenzyme analysis of postvaccinal and postinfectious immunity to influenza].

Paired specimens of blood sera, upper respiratory tract secretions, and saliva from healthy, influenza-infected, and live influenza trivaccine-immunized humans were tested in parallel by HI tests and enzyme immunoassay (EIA). The resulting comparative data suggest that determination by EIA of specific secretory IgA in the saliva may be recommended as an independent test for large-scale influenza diagnosis, evaluation of the immune status of people, and trials of influenza vaccines. By immunologic parameters, this method is not inferior to the standard ones. At the same time its advantages include simplicity and readily available large volumes of saliva even from children as well as no necessity to bleed subjects to be examined.
