Effect of temperature on siderophore production by Candida albicans.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of elevated temperature on growth and siderophore production by Candida albicans. The results showed that an increase in incubation temperature from 37 degrees C to 41 degrees C produced a marked decrease in both the rate and quantity of siderophore production. Elevated temperature was unable to suppress growth of C. albicans in either a control culture medium or a deferrated culture medium. A significant suppression of growth compared to the controls was observed in the deferrated media at both 37 degrees C and 41 degrees C. However with time, the growth of cells in the deferrated media showed partial recovery which was followed by an increase in siderophore production. Thus, elevation of temperature to suppress growth and siderophore production by C. albicans appears to be an ineffective host defense mechanism.

Siderophore production by the pathogenic yeast, Candida albicans.

Biochemical assays were used to determine that some strains of Candida albicans were capable of simultaneous secretion of both the hydroxamate and phenolate-type siderophores when grown in a deferrated medium at 37 degrees C. All isolants of C. albicans released hydroxamate-type siderophores into the culture medium; whereas, approximately 40% of the strains simultaneously secreted phenolate-type siderophores. The presence of phenolate and hydroxamate-type siderophores in the culture medium was further confirmed by assaying the culture media with type specific siderophore-dependent bacterial auxotrophs. This is the first report showing production of both classes of siderophores by a pathogenic yeast.

Cell surface T antigen in cells infected with simian virus 40 or an adenovirus-simian virus 40 hybrid, Ad2+D2.

Cell surface T antigen, detected by a radioimmune assay that uses 125I-labeled Staphylococcus aureus protein A and antibodies against either authentic T antigen or D2 hybrid T antigen, was found in simian virus 40-transformed and -infected cells and in cells infected with an adenovirus-simian virus 40 hybrid, Ad2+D2. In simian virus 40 lytic infection, the surface T antigen appeared at the same time as the nuclear T antigen.

Thoracic duct changes in schistosomal hepatic fibrosis.

The changes in the thoracic duct were studied in schistosomatic hepatic fibrosis, particularly in cases with ascites. The postmortem findings, lymphangiography, and clinical thoracic duct cannulation showed that, particularly in cases with ascites, the thoracic duct is dilated, pressure within is raised, and the lymph flow is increased. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the site and the treatment of ascites.

Sudanese mucosal leishmaniasis: epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, immune responses and treatment.

The epidemiology, clinical features, pathology, immune responses, diagnosis and treatment of 14 patients with mucosal leishmaniasis in the Sudan are described. The condition occurred mainly in adult males, particularly in certain closely related tribes from the western Sudan. It affected the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and/or the oral mucosa and sometimes followed treated kala azar. The parasites were sometimes confined to the mucosa, sometimes spread to the lymph nodes, and rarely infected the bone marrow and spleen. One of the 2 patients with both visceral and mucosal leishmaniasis differed from classical kala azar cases; his infection was longer lasting, he was leishmanin positive, and his peripheral mononuclear cells proliferated in response to leishmanial antigens. Mucosal leishmaniasis following treated kala azar is a similar phenomenon to post-kala azar dermal leishmaniasis and post-kala azar uveitis. Post-kala azar mucosal leishmaniasis can therefore be added to the other post-kala azar leishmanial infections. Using the polymerase chain reaction, Southern blot analysis with specific probes, and isoenzyme characterization, the causative parasite was identified as Leishmania donovani in 4 patients and as L. major in one. Unlike American mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, mucosal leishmaniasis in the Sudan was not preceded or accompanied by cutaneous lesions and the response to pentavalent antimony or ketoconazole was good.

Breast fibroadenomas in renal transplant recipients.

Breast fibroadenomas are the most common solid lesions found in young women. We report on four patients who underwent renal transplantation and developed bilateral fibroadenomas while on cyclosporine (CsA). One patient developed symptomatic giant fibroadenomas and underwent bilateral mammoplasty. A significant decrease in the size of the breasts was noticed after switching to tacrolimus in three patients. Awareness of the association between CsA and fibroadenomas should help to achieve the correct diagnosis in transplant patients without subjecting them to unnecessary procedures.
