Skeletal muscle hemangioma: a cause of unexplained pain about the knee.

Two cases of perplexing pain about the knee secondary to hemangioma of the vastus medialis are presented. The diagnostic criteria, pathological histology, and treatment are reviewed. Magnetic resonance imaging has distinct advantages over both computed tomography scans and angiography as a diagnostic tool.

Reactions of oxidizing and reducing radical probes with lipoamide dehydrogenase.

One-electron redox radicals generated by radiation--chemical methods have been reacted with the oxidized (E) form of pig heart lipoamide dehydrogenase. The reducing radicals eaq- and CO2-. and O2-. do not measurably inactivate the enzyme, whereas the oxidizing species .OH and Br2-. do. The CO2-. anion forms the semiquinone radical .EH on the millisecond time scale, whereas at longer times only EH2 is observed. Evidence suggests that Br2-. oxidizes adjacent sulfhydryl groups to form a disulfide in a manner similar to the reaction of Cu2+ ions. With .OH, destruction of the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) moiety is responsible for at least 50% of the enzyme inactivation. This destruction appears to be a result of secondary reactions which transfer damage from remote initial sites of attack to the flavin. Pathways for migration of eaq- damage also appear to exist.

A pulse radiolysis study of zinc(II)-insulin.

Reactions of eaq with zinc(II)-insulin at pH 6.6 and 9.0 yielded relatively low disulphide anion absorptions, suggesting eaq reacts at other sites than S-S. A similar conclusion was reached for the reation of CO2 where an even lower yield of disulphide anion was found. However, here the disulphide anion yield increased with 'prepulsing'. Simultaneously the rate constant decreased, implying that a more reactive site was 'cleaned up'. While no reaction of Br2 with insulin was observed, both OH and Cl2 reacted rapidly and predominantly at the tyrosine residues. The second order rate constants, calculated in terms of insulin monomer concentrations, are reported for eaq, CO2 and Cl2. The transient spectra qualitatively support evidence regarding the accessibility of S-S bonds and tryosine residues in the various forms of insulin as predicted from earlier studies.

30-year observation of patients with Eale's disease.

Of 135 patients with Eale's disease, two thirds of the patients were men around 20 years of age at the onset, while the women were older. The disease continued from six months to 51 years. Several patients were followed for 40 years. The prognosis for useful vision was good as only one patient became blind in both eyes.
