Histological alterations in the liver of sea bream, Sparus aurata L., caused by short- or long-term feeding with vegetable oils. Recovery of normal morphology after feeding fish oil as the sole lipid source.

This study evaluated the effects of fish oil (FO) replacement by vegetable oils [soybean oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO), linseed oil (LO)] and subsequent feeding with FO on the liver morphology of sea bream. A short-term trial (3 months) and long-term trial (6 months) were carried out feeding sea bream with the following experimental diets: FO100%; SO60% + FO40%; RO60% +FO40%; LO60% + FO40%; SO + RO +LO60% + FO40%. Finally, all groups from the long-term trial were fed with FO100% for 95 days (washout period). Liver samples were taken for histological and biochemical studies. In both the short- and long-term trials, livers of sea bream fed LO60% and SO + RO + LO60% showed a similar hepatic morphology to that observed in fish fed FO100%. In contrast, sea bream fed SO60% showed an intense steatosis, with foci of swollen hepatocytes containing numerous lipid vacuoles. After the washout period, a considerable reduction of the cytoplasmic vacuolation and the lipid vacuole accumulation were observed in the livers of fish fed the different experimental diets. The results of this study suggested that the type of non-essential fatty acid, characteristic of vegetable oils, induces the appearance of steatosis in the following order: linoleic acid > linolenic acid > oleic acid. However, the liver alterations found during the experimental periods with vegetable oils are reversible when the fish are re-fed with a balanced diet (FO100%), indicating the non-pathological character of these histological changes.

[Cervical metastasis from testicular teratoma].

The presence of neck metastasis in patients with testicular germ cell neoplasms in a rare but well known phenomenon. The incidence of neck metastasis in testicular carcinoma has been reported to be present in a 5% of cases. When cervical metastasis occurs, surgical resection of the residual disease following chemotherapy and using a specific technique of modified neck dissection results in a surprisingly improvement of the prognosis.

[Sepsis due to Vibrio cholerae no 01].

Two fatal sepsis cases in two male patients (58 and 14 years old) due to Vibrio cholerae non 01 are described. Their original diseases were hepatic cirrhosis and acute lymphoblastic leukemia in its third complete remission. In this last case, gastroenteritis due to V. cholerae non 01 was also diagnosed. These sepsis presented a rapid evolution and positive hemoculture after 24 and 48 hours of incubation. Both strains isolated presented similar biochemical characteristics and did not agglutinate in the presence of the specific serum against V. cholerae. Both strains were susceptible to most of the antibiotics available. Sepsis due to V. cholerae non 01 is usually associated to other original diseases and to immunodepression. Management of these sepsis is difficult and mortality rates are very high.

[Ceftizoxime: in vitro evaluation].

The effect of ceftizoxime, a new aminothiazolil-syn-methoxy-iminocephalosporin has been evaluated on 169 strains of Gram negative bacilli isolated from hospitalized patients and compared with that of cefotaxime and of ceftriaxone. The effect of these 3 cephalosporins and of cefalotin was also evaluated on 50 strains of staphylococcus. CIM50 of ceftizoximel was as follows: K. pneumoniae less than .032, aureus and S. epidermidis less than .2 CIM90 for the same species was: K. pneumoniae less than .25, E. coli less than .63, E. Cloacae and S. marcescens less than 8, S. aureus less than 32, S. epidermidis less than 16. The values obtained with cefotaxime and ceftriaxone were similar. Cefalotin was clearly more active on staphylococcus strains with CIM50 and CIM90 for both species of less than .25 and less than .2 respectively.

Ultrastructural modifications of the cavities formed by folliculo-stellate cells in chicken adenohypophysis under septic shock conditions.

Effects of septic shock by repeated inoculations with Escherichia coli on the ultrastructure of the folliculo-stellate cells and cavities of the adenohypophysis of the chicken were investigated in order to determine the function of these cavities. The principal morphological modifications were dilation of the Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum and autophagic vacuoles, and necrosis phenomena in the stellate cells. The follicular cavities showed dilation, and there was heterogeneous dense material and granular elements in the follicular lumen. Based on results reported in the literature, the observations reported here are evidence of a "cleaning-role", for the removal of cell debris, when there is endocrine disfunction.
