[Bioabsorbable osteofixation devices].

There is continued interest in the development of new biomaterials. The application of new implantable biomaterials requires intense research and thorough evaluation. Much time and effort has been required to overcome the risks and problems associated with the bioabsorbable devices. For surgical bone fixation, these materials were investigated since the 1960's. Different polymer properties were explored to ensure adequate strength and biocompatibility. High-molecular-weight bioabsorbable polymers were initially used, followed by addition of reinforcement materials. The most recent materials are self-reinforced, small yet strong devices. The newer generations contain bioactive substances such as antibiotics and growth factors. Bioabsorbable materials are constantly changing as we try to adopt the principles of tissue engineering. Surgeons are using new techniques to exploit these polymers and their bioabsorbable properties. It is hoped that this multidisciplinary approach of surgery and research will continue to help the further evolution of biomaterial science.

Nodular fasciitis in the oral cavity.

Rapidly growing soft-tissue lesions in the oral and maxillofacial region can represent a variety of diagnoses involving radically different treatment modalities. Accurate diagnosis is important to avoid unnecessary and often mutilating surgery. Nodular fasciitis is a rapidly proliferating fibroblastic lesion that presents as a tumour-like mass. Although up to 20% of cases occur in the head and neck region, lesions of the oral cavity are extremely rare. A case of oral nodular fasciitis is described, and a review of the literature is presented.

Effectiveness of salt versus glass bead sterilizers.

Microorganisms can be removed from dental instruments by various methods, including treatment in salt and glass bead sterilizers. However, no rigorous, controlled, in vivo or in vitro studies have been performed to verify the respective efficiencies of these methods. The goals of this study were to determine if the positioning of instruments at the centre or edge of a salt sterilizer results in differential sterilization effectiveness, and to compare the effectiveness of salt sterilizers relative to glass bead sterilizers. Autoclaved number 60 reamers were contaminated by plunging them to the handle in a commercial Bacillus stearothermophilus spore suspension. They were then sterilized for different periods of time and at different positions in the sterilizers. Each experiment included positive and negative controls. The results showed that better sterilization is achieved at the edge of the chamber than at the centre, and that salt sterilizers are more effective than glass bead sterilizers for a given period of time (15 seconds) in the sterilizer.
