An accurate method of measuring medical humidifier output.

A low-cost capacitance hygrometer capable of measuring steady-state and some transient changes in the output of medical humidifiers is introduced and evaluated. The method of operation is presented in detail, as is a comparison with the widely used gravimetric standard. The hygrometer produces results within 7% of those given by the gravimetric method when using units of percentage relative humidity (which give the widest discrepancies). This is shown to be an acceptable figure for the proposed application. Problems encountered when converting units of humidity are discussed in detail and methods of conversion explained.

Electrical hazards incurred when using anti-static anaesthetic hose.

The following paper describes the presence of a potential hazard when anaesthetic anti-static rubber elephant tubing is connected between electrical equipment with a metal case, and a patient. The conductive properties of this tubing are shown to increase as temperature rises and to be permanently changed when the tubing is exposed to standard autoclaving procedures. Reasons for changes in conductivity are discussed in detail, and two solutions are offered enabling the patient to be protected against large leakage currents, yet retaining the anti-static properties of the gas circuit.

The design and development of a computerised I.T.U. planned preventive maintenance system.

This paper outlines the design and development of a Planned Preventive Maintenance System, from its initiation in 1973 through to a fully computerised package in 1979, Manual, semi-automatic, and fully computerised systems are compared and the philosophy behind the computer package described in detail along with the file store. The objectives behind the establishment of the computer system are discussed and an assessment of the package by the West Midlands Regional Health Authority is detailed. Conclusions are reached concerning the effectiveness of the package in an Intensive Therapy Unit and suggestions make with regard to the incorporation of the present Estmancode system onto a computer; enabling the package to be used by Works Departments.

The evaluation and improvement of an anti-pollution system.

A recently installed anti-pollution system, initially designed to function in a passive mode, was evaluated, but found to be inconstant in its performance. A simple method of making the system active is described and evaluated.
