A MORTALITY STUDY OF PRIMARY TUMOURS OF BONE IN CANADA.

A five-year study was undertaken to determine the incidence of primary bone cancer in Canada in order to assess the effects of subsequent increases in background radiation, should such occur. Eight hundred and twenty-seven cases were investigated, and the annual incidence rate was estimated to be 6.3 per million population. Osteosarcoma was the most common type of tumour, accounting for more than half of all confirmed cases. Over 60% of the tumours occurred in males.

GEOGRAPHIC ASPECTS OF MALIGNANT DISEASE.

In view of recent publications describing a malignant lymphoma in African children, a review is presented of the geographical distribution of various cancers throughout the world. The epidemiological studies which have revealed these malignant tumours have provided valuable clues to the control of cancer and represent an effort to reduce and ultimately to eliminate certain forms of malignant disease. In Canada the distribution of cancer of the stomach has been observed to vary among provinces, being higher in Newfoundland than elsewhere. A study to determine the validity of this observation is currently being undertaken by the National Cancer Institute of Canada.

Cancer mortality in various countries.

A statistical analysis by sexes was made of the deaths in 1950 and 1951 in eight countries (Australia, Canada, England and Wales, France, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands and the USA) from cancer in the following sites: buccal cavity and pharynx, digestive organs and peritoneum, respiratory system, breast (female), uterus, genital organs (male) and urinary organs. Comparisons between countries were made on the basis of age-adjusted and age-specific death rates. Substantial variations were found for the specific sites of the disease: they are presented in detail in the tables and graphs.
