Acute erosive gastritis induced by aspirin, ketoprofen, ibuprofen, and naproxen: its prevention by metiamide and cimetidine.

Aspirin, ketoprofen, ibuprofen, and naproxen all produced acute gastric erosions in rats. Aspirin produced significantly more erosions than ketoprofen, ibuprofen, or naproxen. There was no significant difference between the effects of ketoprofen, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Aspirin and naproxen produced a synergistic effect at higher dosage. Metiamide and cimetidine were effective in preventing this type of experimental acute erosive gastritis.

Acute Disease↗

Transient megacolon after gastroscopy.

A 38-year-old man who developed abdominal distention and pain following fiberoptic gastroscopy is described. The patient had had an upper gastrointestinal roentgenographic series earlier, and the dilatation of the colon was thought to be due to entrapment of air in the proximal colon secondary to inspissated barium in the descending colon. Premedication with meperidine hydrochloride and atropine also may have been contributory. A saline enema relieved the patient's symptoms and a barium enema examination later showed a normal colon.

Carcinoma of the esophagus and hypercalcemia.

Hypercalcemia was found in 19 (28%) of 67 patients with cancer of the esophagus. There was no evidence of bone metastases in 14 (20%) of the patients with hypercalcemia. The location of the lesion (upper, middle or lower esophagus) appears to have no bearing on the clinical features in this condition and the association of hypercalcemia with esophageal malignancy, even in the absence of bone metastases, should be recognized.

Leiomyoblastoma of the stomach.

Two cases of leiomyoblastoma of the stomach are reported. Endoscopic features, ie, submucosal mass with umbilication and apical ulceration, presence of normal peristalsis, and absence of stenosis or irregularity, help differentiate this tumor from carcinoma of the stomach. Case histories are presented and pathologic features are described.
