The term 'heritability', which evokes the image of transmission from parents to children, is used in biology to characterize the resemblance of related individuals in terms of a given characteristic, and to analyse the genetic and environmental causes of this resemblance. In fact, there are three definitions of heritability and it is important to distinguish among these carefully in order to avoid misinterpretations. Various techniques for measuring associated parameters are linked to these definitions. A rigorous analysis of the assumptions which permit the interpretation of parameter estimates is necessary to avoid false conclusions.

A total of 315 normal, unrelated individuals from six of the seven principal religious communities of Lebanon have been typed for 26 alleles of the A and B loci. The gene, haplotype frequencies and delta values have been calculated. The HLA gene frequencies for loci A and B reported in this study are shown to cross Moslim-Christian lines, but generate a distinguishably different profile for the Armenian immigrant subpopulation. This first-level homogeneity which is inconsistent with results earlier reported for ABO, rhesus and Gm systems, seems to disappear when linkage disequilibrium deltas are compared.
The average stature of 23,400 young adults was 172.33 cm in 1974; it is not the final size because they were 18 to 20 years old. Compared to previous data, we note that the rate of increase grows: it was of 0.3 cm every 10 years at the beginning of the century, of 1 cm in the middle of this century, actually it reaches 1.7 cm per ten years. Studying the correlations between the increase of stature and the variations of some factors during this century, we find multiple correlations accounting for the conditions of life, without a predominant factor. Among the sample of 1974, we find again the same result. The genetic factors (consanguinity, exogamy) show more modest correlations than mesological factors. The mental capacities show the strongest correlation, but does not explain the tendency occuring one in a hundred year. We still do not know why children grow quicker and reach a final bigger size than in the past.
Data collected concerning the Kel Kummer Touareg tribe permitted the characterization of each person by (a) a "geneological profile", by which the genetic contributions made to him by various of the founders of the tribe can be seen; and (b) a "hematological profile", which shows the different alleles existing in the tribe which have come to him. The study of the correlation between these two approaches shows that, overall, a person is defined better by his membership in a population than by his geneological network.

The HL-A groups of 138 Kel Diniq Twaregs were determined by the platelet complement fixation microtechnique. Their HL-A characteristics, compared to those of Caucasoid populations, are: decrease in HL-A2, 9, W17 and W15; increase in W28, W32, HL-A7, W5, W10 and second locus blank; absence of Da25 (W30 plus W31), HL-A13, W15, W18, W27. This genetic structure is in accordance with the isolated condition of this population. The most frequent haplotypes are W28,HL-A7, common to both the Kel Diniq and the Kel Kummer Twaregs previously studied; W32,W10 and HL-A3, HL-A5, Kel Diniq only. These two populations are both isolates, with a common origin the seventeenth century, but separated as from that date. Genealogical studies have enabled the haplotype W28,HL-A7 to be attributed to the two brothers who founded the populations in the seventeenth century. A comparison of these two populations constitutes a model for the study of genetic drift and the founder effect.
