Respiratory function dynamics in individuals with increased motor activity during standard exercise testing.

Functional diagnostics is one of the most important areas of sports medicine, which plays an increasingly role in selection of athletes, optimisation of training, early diagnostics and prophylaxis of sports pathology. Functional condition of the body undergoes constant changes under the influence of a number of factors. The differences may be considerable and pose problems related to the recruitment of athletes to teams in game sports and in individual sports. Physical ability is determined by the quality of external breathing and cardiovascular functions and by peculiarities of metabolism related to the tissue breathing and transport of substrates. In qualitative assessment of these phenomena one must relate the parameters of the individual's functional conditions to the required or desired values, i.e. norms. On the other hand, there exist no norms for a comprehensive evaluation of the Lithuanian persons' physical capacity and breathing system and metabolic function capacity including residents going in for sports. It is not clear whether one may rely upon the nomograms drawn up by foreign authors because they may not be applicable to Lithuanian athletes for a number of possible reasons: differences in training methods, regional cultural environment (differences in energy requirements in daily life), nutritional aspects, even demographic peculiarities taking into account limited assimilation level and small number of inhabitants. It has been established that the maximum oxygen uptake indicators reflecting the body's dynamic potential are different in elite athletes when evaluated during a standard ergo metric test. The aerobic capacity is determined by all links in the oxygen transport chain, since both heart rate (HR) and breathing indicators (VE-ventilation volume, PEF-peak expiratory flow and RR-respiratory rate) are characterised by equally good correlation with the oxygen uptake indicators and high determination coefficients (all r > 0.95, R2 > 95%, p < 0.01).

On the connection between hard cosmic ray flux variations and changes in cardiovascular disease in Vilnius city.

A predictive correlation between hard cosmic ray flux (HCRF) near the Earth's surface and sudden increases in the number of cases of cardiovascular disease (CVD) was studied in Vilnius city. Gamma spectrometers were used to measure HCRF. Changes in the total number of impulses registered by these devices were taken as the physical parameter for prediction of an increase in the number of CVD cases. For quantitative assessment of CVD dynamics two empirical criteria for HCRF were proposed: (1) a consistent fall in the HCRF by 200 or more impulses for 4 or more hours per day; (2) the difference (no less than 15 impulses per hour) between the average number of impulses registered in 2 (subsequent and previous) days. The periods analyzed were those when the number of CVD cases exceeded the average monthly level by 10% and 15%. HCRF fluctuations were used as an indirect indicator of variations in the geomagnetic field, and a leap in CVD cases was predicted 1-3 days following a change in the HCRF according to the two criteria mentioned above. The predictive reliability of an increase in CVD cases within 2-3 days exceeded 80%, and within 1-2 days 70%. No essential difference in predictive reliability was observed when the number of CVD cases exceeded the average monthly level by 10% or 15%. Geomagnetic field variations contribute only insignificantly to leaps in the number of CVD cases, which are evoked by the sum effects of other factors. The results of the present study should be regarded as preliminary.

An evaluation of laryngeal cancer morbidity time trends in Lithuania.

PURPOSE: To make assessments of the rates of cases of larynx cancer in Lithuania in the years 1978-2001 as well as possible trends of changes in the future. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data contained in the Lithuanian Cancer Register for the period 1978-2001 about new cases as well as the data compiled by the Lithuanian Department of Statistics on the average number of population of Lithuania within the same period in the same age groups have been used in the course of the study. The data have been standardized by age using direct method, in accordance with the European standard; a regression analysis of larynx cancer case rates was made. RESULTS: After standardization of data for the period 1978-2001, tendencies of increase have been registered both among men and women: in 1978 the case rate per 100,000 population was 10.73 among men and 0.26 among women, in 2001 the corresponding data were 11.6 among men and 0.7 among women. Throughout the period the investigated case rate for men was higher than for women. An increasing average age of men and women suffering from this disease has been noticed: average age for men is annually increasing by 0.1566 years and for women--0.0602 years. The forecast for men in the year 2006 is 13.88 cases per 100,000 population and 0.54 for women. CONCLUSIONS: The increase of larynx cancer case rates is growing more rapidly among women than among men, and also average age of the patients is increasing. The forecast is that in 2006 the case rate will be growing up, and both men and women will get ill at older age.
