Staff pharmacists' job attitudes and job performance.

An instrument was developed and used to evaluate job performance of staff pharmacists, and the relationship between performance and job satisfaction was examined. In designing the performance rating instrument (PRI), 23 measurable work-related behaviors of hospital staff pharmacists were identified through interviews with pharmacy directors. For each of the 15 behaviors ranked most important by hospital pharmacy directors, a four-point scale of performance was defined. Job satisfaction was measured using the job descriptive index (JDI) augmented by questions specific to hospital pharmacy practice. Staff pharmacists at eight hospitals completed the JDIs, and their directors completed the corresponding PRIs. Of 66 sets of PRIs and JDIs distributed, 38 pairs of usable responses were returned. There were a number of significant correlations between individual items on the PRI and JDI, but the correlation between the composite scores for the two scales was not significant. JDI and PRI scores decreased with age and years of practice, but the decrease was not significant. The PRI is a short, understandable method of quantifying hospital staff pharmacist performance. No significant correlation between job satisfaction and performance was found.

Simplified method to study stability of pharmaceutical preparations.

Data simulating zero-, first-, and simple second- and third-order kinetic reactions are employed at four elevated temperatures. The existence of a linear relationship is established between the logarithm of t0.9 (the time required for the concentration of the reactant remaining to decompose to reach 90% of its original value) and the reciprocal of the corresponding temperature in absolute degrees. The independence of the result from the order of the reaction is reconfirmed using literature data. The application of the linear relationship to predict the shelflife of dosage forms is discussed.

Atrio-ventricular conduction defects and arrhythmias by selective perfusion of the A-V conduction system in the canine heart.

Ligation and cannulation of the anterior septal artery in 43 canine hearts caused changes in ST-T segment of the electrocardiogram in all animals. Perfusions of 0.9% NaCl, one to ten micrograms of acetylcholine, isoproterenol, epinephrine and norepinephrine, into the anterior septal artery caused variations in the ECG ranging from exaggerated ST-T changes to PR prolongation, ectopic atrial, nodal and ventricular beats, A-V blocks and dissociations, atrial fibrillation and ventricular fibrillation. The response seemed to be somewhat specific for cholinergic versus adrenergic agents showing more conduction defects by the former against greater changes in automaticity by the latter agents.

Deviation of dielectric constant from ideality for certain binary solvent systems.

An equation was derived which relates the dielectric constant of mixtures of a binary solvent system to the mole fraction of the polar and nonpolar components of the system. The coefficients of the formula are readily calculated from the dielectric constant and the molar volume of the pure components of the binary solvent system. These calculated values are employed in graphical representations of the theoretical relationship of the dielectric constant of the binary solvent system and the mole fraction of the polar component of the solvent system. Experimental measurements are employed to demonstrate deviations from ideality.
