The first isolations of Mycoplasma pulmonis were made from inflamed ovaries of 2 C3H/F1 mice. Investigation of cultures from a further 110 apparently healthy mice revealed 14 cases of M. pulmonis localized in the ovaries and associated with oophoritis.

M&B 28,767 [(+/-)-11-deoxy-16-phenoxy-17,18,19,20-tetranor prostaglandin E1] and a series of close analogues have been compared with U-46619 [(15S)-hydroxy-11 alpha, 9 alpha-(epoxymethano)-prosta-(5Z,13E)-dienoic acid] for prostaglandin endoperoxide-like pharmacological actions in vitro and in vivo. M&B 28,767 caused powerful dose-related contraction of rabbit aorta (EC50: 2.0 microM) and mesenteric artery (EC50: 0.2 microM) strips in vitro, but was less active than U-46619 and/or noradrenaline. M&B 28,767 induced rapid and irreversible aggregation of rat (0.9 times potency of U-46619) and human (0.25 times potency of U-46619) platelets in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in vitro. Intravenous administration of M&B 28,767 to urethane-allobarbitone anaesthetized rats produced immediate and dose-related thrombocytopoenia (equipotent with U-46619), accompanied in some animals by transient small pressor effects at low doses (1-2 micrograms kg-1) which were not statistically significant and invariably by sharp depressor effects at higher doses (3-10 micrograms kg-1). U-46619 caused moderate, but not dose-related, pressor effects at all doses tested. Considerable variation in potency occurred amongst the thirteen structural analogues of M&B 28,767. Platelet aggregatory activity for those members of the 11-deoxy 16-phenoxy-PGE1 series tested in rat PRP in vitro demonstrated a positive and significant correlation with pro-aggregatory activity in vivo and agonist potency on rabbit aortic strip in vitro.

M&B 28,767 [(+/-)11-deoxy-16-phenoxy-omega-tetranor PGE1] and 16, 16'-dimethyl PGE2 methylester (DMPG) were compared for their effects on gastric acid secretion (GAS) and gastric ulceration (GU), employing various laboratory models. In anaesthetised rats, GAS was stimulated by a continuous i.v. infusion of pentagastrin (30 micrograms/kg/h), and PG analogues were perfused through the stomach for 1 h. M&B 28,767 (3-15 micrograms/kg/h) and DMPG (3-60 micrograms/kg/h) reduced GAS in a dose-related manner, the ED50 values being 4 and 15 micrograms/kg/h respectively. In conscious rats possessing indwelling gastric cannulae, oral doses of M&B 28,767 (0.025-0.1 microgram/kg) and DMPG (0.50-1.0 microgram/kg) caused a prolonged inhibition of pentagastrin-stimulated GAS. M&B 28,767 was 17 times more potent than DMPG; the respective ED50 values were 0.036 and 0.6 microgram/kg. Indomethacin-induced ulceration in rats, was reduced by both M&B 28,767 and DMPG; the respective ED50 values being 3.0 and 0.8 micrograms/kg. Both compounds given orally increased gastrointestinal motility in mice; M&B 28,767 (1-3 mg/kg) and DMPG (0.1-0.3 mg/kg) caused diarrhoea, the former being about 0.1 times as potent as the latter. In another test, M&B 28,767 (0.5-5.0 mg/kg) and DMPG (10-40 micrograms/kg) overcame morphine-induced constipation in a dose-related manner, the respective ED50s being 0.9-1.4 mg/kg and 20-40 micrograms/kg. Thus, M&B 28,767 had a better profile of activity than DMPG as an antisecretory and antiulcer agent.
The nucleotide sequence of the mRNA encoding the nucleocapsid protein of the New Jersey serotype (Ogden strain) of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) was determined from two overlapping cDNA clones spanning almost entirely the coding region of the mRNA. The 5'-terminal noncoding sequence present in the mRNA but not in the cDNA clones was determined from a primer extended to the 5' terminus of the mRNA. The mRNA is 1329 nucleotides long (excluding polyadenylic acid) and encodes a protein of 422 amino acids. The nucleotide sequence was compared with the previously determined nucleotide sequence of the nucleocapsid protein of the Indiana serotype. An overall identity of 67.7% was found between the two serotypes. The only place where insertions and/or deletions have occurred during the evolution of the two viral genes from their presumed common ancestor is in the untranslated region. The nonidentical nucleotides are distributed throughout the length of the mRNA although not in an entirely random manner. The predicted amino acid sequence demonstrates that both proteins are initiated from the initiator codon located at the same distance from the 5' end (nucleotides 14 to 16) and contain the same number of amino acids. An overall identity of more than 80% of the amino acid sequence was observed between the two proteins when conservative replacements of amino acids were considered.
A case of paraganglioma of parasellar origin in a 7-year-old girl is described. She presented with hemibase syndrome with involvement of a majority of the left cranial nerves. Three times in the past 2 years she had recurrent ophthalmoplegia with complete recovery. She was treated surgically and with postoperative radiotherapy. The site of origin of this paraganglioma as well as the clinical presentation are uncommon features in this case.
