The proposal this study is to analyse national dissertations and theses on intensive care nursing The author consulted the Catalogues of the Centre of Studies and Research on Nursing--volume 1 (1979) to 15 (1997). The author analysed the abstracts and in order to search for: number of studies, place of presentation, theme and theoretical methodological reference.
This paper describes part of a multicenter study sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization to assess health care reforms and their implications for nursing in several countries. The objective of this research was to learn the views of nurses working in philanthropic hospitals in Ribeirão Preto, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, regarding the changes in nursing practice coming from Brazil's health care reform and implementation of the Unified Health System (UHS). Data were obtained through structured interviews with seven nurses who met the selection criteria, from the three philanthropic hospitals in Ribeirão Preto. The nurses reported a decline in the quality of care and in the number of beds for UHS patients. The nurses reported that UHS implementation initially led to infrastructure improvements in the philanthropic hospitals. However, the reforms eventually shifted toward improving the care of private and privately insured patients. In addition, the nurses emphasized their heavy work loads and low pay. The nurses' reports indicated that Brazil's UHS is going through a crisis. In general, the nurses linked this crisis to problems in funding and allocation of resources.
The aim of this article is to reflect on some dimensions of the assistance to patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), looking for some theoretical subsidies in bioethics considering the principles of justice, autonomy and beneficence, the rights of the critically ill, and the humanization of attendance. It is timely to discuss the perspectives that involve caring in the intensive care unit, searching to surmount the view that reduces the patients to biological patterns, incorporating life in all of its complexity and completeness.
One of the methodological ways that can be used in research is phenomenology, that originated as a movement inside philosophy, being also applied in human sciences. In nursing, the application of phenomenology also represented a search for a methodological alternative in research. The proposal of this work is to contribute with some theoretical subsidies to the comprehension of phenomenological referentials. Initially this work presents some basic ideas of the phenomenology, as a philosophical branch, treating it as a methodological alternative in research, and approaching its utilization by nurses, as a methodology of investigation.
The objective of this study is to reflect on the organization and development of nursing research in Brazil, pointing out some knowledge advances and limits until the moment, as well as indicating some of the challenges for the research in nursing. One of these challenges would be establishing the relation between nursing and care.
