In 100 children between the ages of 1-10 years, observers of differing experience reliably and rapidly detected 50 oesophageal and 50 tracheal intubations in a randomised single-blind trial using the original oesophageal detector device. However, only two children under the age of 2 years were tested and no conclusions can be drawn for this age group from this study.
In 60 children aged 1-9 years, weighing under 33 kg, oral trimeprazine and oral trimeprazine plus droperidol were compared as premedicants in a controlled, double-blind clinical trial. The addition of droperidol to the trimeprazine syrup produces greater uniformity in pre-operative sedation, a low incidence of postoperative vomiting, and a reduced requirement for postoperative analgesia.
The factors which contribute to the formation of microaggregates in stored blood for transfusion have been discussed and their significance assessed. The history of the development of blood microfiltration is described. The advantages and disadvantages of screen microfilters in comparison with depth filters are considered. Screen filters with a pore diameter of about 40 micron would appear to have definite advantages.
A technique of neuroleptanalgesia is described for effective and reliable sedation during intra-ocular surgery under local analgesia. The absence of side effects using modified neuroleptanalgesia was of particular value in a situation in a developing country in which large numbers of patients had to be handled in a comparatively short period of time.
Three currently available condenser humidifiers were studied to assess their ability to conserve water loss and to measure the resistance imposed by the apparatus. The value and possible effectiveness of these devices in clinical practice is discussed.
