Influence of prostaglandin E1 on high density lipoprotein-fraction lipid levels in rats.

Serum lipid concentrations were determined in rats treated with PGE1 and in controls. Reduced concentrations of total lipids (P less than 0.001), cholesterol (P less than 0.001), triglycerides (P less than 0.05), and phospholipids (P less than 0.002) were found in the treated rats. Furthermore, decreased concentrations of HDL-cholesterol (P less than 0.001), HDL-triglycerides (P less than 0.02), and HDL-phospholipids (P less than 0.02) were observed in the treated rats. These lipid changes could be related to the antilipolytic action of PGE1. Furthermore, these results suggest that PGE1 may exert an antiatherogenic effect modifying serum lipid levels.

Lipid levels in high density lipoprotein subfractions in smokers with peripheral vascular disease.

No significant difference in HDL cholesterol was found between smokers with PVD and corresponding controls. The ratio of HDL cholesterol to the sum of (VLDL + LDL) cholesterol was reduced in patients with PVD. Patients with PVD had significantly highly serum triglyceride levels. A slightly significant difference could be demonstrated for serum cholesterol and serum phospholipids concentrations in smoking patients with PVD.

Changes of HDL-lipid composition as related to delta 9-THC action.

An attempt was made to investigate the possible action of delta 9-THC on HDL-Lipid composition. Significant changes were observed in the serum total lipids, triglycerides and HDL subfractions after hashish smoking. The results are discussed in relation to the possible alterations of some enzymatic mechanisms regulating lipid metabolism in hashish users.

Deoxycytidylate deaminase in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction.

The diagnostic value of deoxycytidylate deaminase (dCMP) in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) was examined in 31 healthy controls and 32 patients with proven AMI. Its specificity in normal controls was 93.5%. Its highest levels were measured on the 3rd to 5th post-infarct day, when its sensitivity reached 97.5%. Its diagnostic performance was similar to that of SGOT, total LDH1/LDH2 ratio greater than 1, total CPK and CPK-MB. Its peak levels showed a highly significant correlation (p less than 0.001) with those of the above enzymes. The measurement of dCMP may be a valuable complement in the diagnosis of AMI since this enzyme is not affected by lung infarction or hemolysis. Moreover, since it expresses tissue regeneration rather than destruction it may aid in the assessment of various interventions designed for the promotion of myocardial healing process.

Changes of liver mitochondrial and microsomal phospholipids resulting from chronic exercise and training in rats.

The concentration of liver mitochondrial and microsomal phospholipids after 40 days exercise and training in rats was investigated. In both, mitochondrial and microsomal fractions of exercised rats an increase of phosphatidylcholine and a decrease of phosphatidylserine were observed. In liver mitochondria an increase of diphosphatidylglycerol and a decrease of phosphatidylethanolamine in exercised rats were found. In liver microsomes of exercised rats an increase of phosphatidylinositol was found.

Changes of platelet phospholipids in diabetes mellitus.

In the present study the phospholipid and fatty acid concentration of platelet has been measured in patients with poorly and well controlled diabetes mellitus and in control subjects. An increased phosphatidylethanolamine (p less than 0.01) and phosphatidylserine (p less than 0.001) content of platelets was found in poorly controlled diabetes as well as an increased phosphatidylserine (p less then 0.001) concentration in well controlled diabetes. The most notable changes of platelet fatty acids were a decreased concentration of palmitic (16:0; p less than 0.01) and linoleic acid (18:2; p less than 0.001) in the poorly controlled diabetes as well as (p less than 0.001) and (p less than 0.025) in the well controlled diabetes, respectively. Also, an increased concentration of arachidonic acid (20:4; p less than 0.001) was found in both groups of diabetics. No differences were found in phospholipid concentration between patients with and without vascular diseases.

Relation of platelet phospholipids to diabetic control.

In the present study we investigated platelet phospholipid concentration in diabetic patients in various conditions of metabolic control. We found an increase in total phospholipid concentration as well as in phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine, the most pronounced changes being observed in poorly controlled patients. We discuss our findings in relation to the metabolic control of the disease and the high incidence of atherosclerotic lesions in these patients.

Levels of erythrocyte 2,3 DPG and ATP in heavy hashish smokers.

The variations in concentration of ATP and 2,3 DPG, and in lactic acid production as a function of time, were measured in the erythrocytes of heavy smokers. Results indicate that the most remarkable reduction in concentration of the compounds examined occurred at 30 and 45 min after hashish smoking. The findings are discussed in connection with the possible influence of hashish components, especially delta 9-THC, on the erythrocyte glycolytic pathway.

Effects of delta 9-THC on human platelet phospholipids.

The possible change in Platelet lipids after smoking delta 9-THC was studied in chronic hashish users. The fluctuations of total phospholipid content is related to alterations of individual phospholipids. Changes in phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylethanolamine are discussed in relation to membrane derangement leading to the increased rate of platelet lysis and aggregation under high doses of the drug.

Erythrocyte phospholipid fatty acid fluctuations in patients with beta-thalassemia minor.

The result of an analysis of red cell individual phospho-lipid fatty acids are presented in patients suffering from beta-thalassemia minor. A significant decrease of each of the following sphingomyelin fatty acids was found: 16:0, 18:1, 18:2, 22:0, 24:0. Phosphatidylcholine fatty acids showed an increase of 16:0, 18:2, 22:0, and 22:1 and a decrease of 18:0 and 20:4. Changes of phosphatidylserine fatty acids, an increase of 14:0, 16:0, 18:0, 18:2, and 22:1, and a decrease of 20:4, 24:0, and 24:1, were observed. An increase of 14:0, 16:0 and a decrease of 18:1, 20:4, and 24:1 phosphatidylethanolamine fatty acids were found. The considerable changes observed in individual phospholipid fatty acids, especially long chain unsaturated ones and primarily arachidonic acid (20:4), indicate a tendency for red cell peroxidation and thus an increased predisposition to hemolysis.

Specific lymphocyte phospholipid changes in chronic renal failure.

I describe phospholipid fluctuations in lymphocytes of peripheral blood of patients with chronic renal failure who were undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. The findings of decreased concentration of total phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine, and phosphatidylethanolamine, and increased concentrations of phosphatidylinositol and diphosphatidylglycerol are discussed, in relation to the lymphocyte membrane enzymic systems, and immune response.

Immunoglobulins in cerebrospinal fluid in various neurologic disorders.

We determined the concentrations of immunoglobulins A, G, and M in cerebrospinal fluid of 16 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, 13 with non-bacterial meningitis, 10 with stroke syndrome, and 13 with epilepsy. The differences in concentrations of immunoglobulins in these groups were remarkable in the patients with multiple sclerosis, meningitis, or stroke syndrome. We propose that the determination of the absolute immunoglobulin content in cerebrospinal fluid is of greater significance than the relative immunoglobulin concentration.

Zinc concentrations in serum as related to myocardial infarction.

Zinc concentrations in serum from 99 patients with acute myocardial infarction were correlated with the incidence of further complications and with activities in serum of the "cardiac" enzymes aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase. A significantly subnormal zinc concentration was observed for the patients, the lowest values being observed on the second and third days after infarct, particularly in patients with serious complications. Moreover, a linear correlation was observed between zinc values and enzyme activities until the fourth day after infarct. We conclude that measurement of zinc in the serum may have diagnostic value for acute myocardial infarction, although its prognostic value is still speculative.

Changes induced by hashish constituents on human erythrocyte phospholipids.

The possible effect of delta 9-THC on human erythrocyte phospholipids of chronic hashish users was studied. Changes in individual phospholipids concentrations were observed in heavy hashish users after smoking the drug. Results are discussed in relation to the possible alterations of enzymatic mechanisms which require the presence of essential for their activation phospholipids.

The significance of lymphocyte lipid changes after smoking hashish.

The increase of lymphocyte total lipids and phospholipids after smoking hashish, indicates either a lipid transfer from their site of production after smoking the drug or a mobilization of their biosynthetic mechanism in the lymphocyte. A fluctuation of individual phospholipid concentrations after "smoking" is related to the influence of certain hashish compounds on the various biosynthetic pathways of phospholipids in lymphocytes. Changes in phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylserine are related to a possible fluctuation of the overall immune ability of the lymphocyte, by affecting the lymphocyte membrane enzyme mechanisms.
