Various immunological parameters (IgA, IgG, IgM serum levels, C3 and C4 complement components and T and B lymphocytes and T-lymphocyte subsets) were determined in 50 patients with epilepsy (20 without medication, 15 on carbamazepine and 15 on valproate) and in 20 controls. The epileptic group had fewer CD4 and more CD8 lymphocytes, while the CD4/CD8 ratio was lower; the levels of IgG and IgM were increased and C4 complement component was also decreased. Patients without medication showed all the above mentioned abnormalities. Patients on carbamazepine had a lower CD4/CD8 ratio, increased IgG and IgM levels and decreased C4 complement component while patients on valproate had more CD8 lymphocytes, a lower CD4/CD8 ratio, increased levels of IgM and decreased C4 complement component. Our results indicate that there is a defective immune mechanism in epileptic patients modified by treatment.
We describe a patient with a clinical picture characterized by subacute onset of confusion, myoclonus, tremor and generalized convulsive seizures with a relapsing course, which was attributed to Hashimoto's encephalopathy. EEG and MRI were diffusely abnormal. High titers of antithyroid antibodies were detected in her serum. She responded well to corticosteroids and her condition remained good during a one-year follow-up.
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme system that is implicated in the oxidant stress model of Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis. This study was designed to assess SOD activity in whole blood and red blood cells of PD patients in early and advanced stages of the disease. Fifteen PD patients in stage I and II (group A) and 15 in stage III and IV (group B) as well as 15 normal controls were included in the study. SOD activity was assessed in whole blood and red blood cells. Group B patients showed a statistically significant decrease of SOD activity in whole blood and in red blood cells. A negative correlation between SOD activity and duration of the disease was observed, while there was no relationship between L-Dopa treatment and SOD activity. Our results indicate that a defect in SOD activity develops over time in PD. Whether this is a later manifestation of antioxidant mechanism deterioration or simply an epiphenomenon remains unclear.
