Hemoglobin E: another cause of microcytic anemia in North America.

The influx of Southeast Asians has expanded the differential diagnosis of microcytic, hypochromic anemia in this country. We describe four patients with hemoglobin E, all of whom had microcytic, hypochromic anemia. Hemoglobin E is benign in both the heterozygous and homozygous states. On routine hemoglobin electrophoresis at pH 8.4, hemoglobin E will migrate near the hemoglobin C and hemoglobin A2 regions. If hemoglobin E is suspected, the laboratory should be advised to do electrophoresis on citrate agar at pH 6.3.

Depressed skull fracture in the newborn. A report of 3 cases.

Three cases of depressed skull fractures in neonates are reported. Two of the fractures were related to birth trauma, but the third probably occurred antenatally. Treatment differed in all 3 cases. One baby underwent surgical elevation of the fracture, and another vacuum elevation, while the third received no treatment. We stress the fact that non-surgical elevation of depressed skull fracture may be successful and preferable to more drastic surgical procedures.

The development of a hypnotherapy service for children.

In September 1988, a Pain and Symptom Management Team was set up to offer hypnotherapy as part of the treatment of pain, discomfort and anxiety. Children are taught self-hypnotherapy skills. Of the first 51 cases referred, 36 were taken on for hypnotherapy and after two to three sessions 29 were rated as improved or much improved. An account is given of the approach of the team and of some of the possible pitfalls.
