[Attempts at surgical treatment of nasal septum deformities in the XIX century with instruments powered by an "electric motor"].

The methods of surgical treatment of nasal spetum deformations by electrical instruments in the XIX century were used especially in United States of America. In the begining of seventieth of the XIX century D.H. Goodwillie used the machine by foot. In the half of eightieth of the XIX century and later the nasal trephine was used by C. Astier, W. Wróblewski, J. Wright, M. Schmidt, J. Wolff, F. Kretschmann and others, G. Spiess employed the special protected speculum. The special saws were also in prewailing use (G. Spiess and others). Those methods were generally not many effective.

3-Methyladenine-DNA glycosylase I from Escherichia coli-computer modeling and supporting experimental evidence.

TagA (3-methyladenine-DNA glycosylase I) excises 3-methyadenine and 3-methylguanine from alkylated DNA. The structure of this enzyme has not yet been determined experimentally. We propose a three-dimensional model of the TagA protein based on the threading algorithm. The model shows that TagA is a mostly alpha-helical protein, in agreement with circular dichroism measurements. None of the eight cysteines present in the TagA sequence forms a disulfide bridge in the model structure, which has also been experimentally verified with the use of Ellman method.

[The organization and activity of the otolaryngological institutions in Warsaw in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century].

The importance of various otolaryngological institutions: hospital wards, outpatient clinics, infirmaries and consulting rooms in the formation of the new specialization, otolaryngology, is described in this paper. An important role of surgery in the first period of the development of otolaryngology is mentioned. At that time all major otolaryngological operations were performed by general surgeons. The necessity to create new separate hospital otolaryngological wards became evident. The attainment of general surgical education and management of suitable post-operation treatment by otolaryngologists as well as creation of autonomous operating rooms were also evident. Poor state of Warsaw otolaryngological outpatient clinics is described in detail. The state of otolaryngological institutions in Europe, in the United States of North America and in the Kingdom of Poland is described briefly.

The genetic stability of potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) molecular variants.

RNA viruses propagate as a population of genetically related entities composing a quasi-species. Specific representatives are the result of both a high mutation rate during replication and competition between the continuously arising sequence variants. Similar to other RNA pathogens, potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) propagates as a population of similar but nonidentical sequences. The sequence of progeny molecules derived from cloned molecular variants of PSTVd were studied after one and six consecutive plant passages. Although the severe parental sequence S23 was found to be genetically stable, all five other parental sequences analyzed, irrespective of their pathogenicity, led to the appearance of complex populations. Divergence of the progeny was observed at the sequence level, but also, more surprisingly, at the level of the pathogenicity of individual progeny molecules. In two cases, the parental sequence was retained in the progeny population. In the other cases, it was completely out-competed and eliminated, sometimes in as little as one plant passage. Although it has been observed previously that artificially mutated PSTVd molecules may revert rapidly to the wild-type sequence, this study presents direct evidence for the rapid evolution of naturally occurring PSTVd sequence variants.

Energy minimization of globular proteins with solvent effects included. Comparison of empirical solvation energy terms and explicit water treatment.

The effect of an empirical solvation energy term on energy minimization of ribonuclease T1 was established using different sets of Atomic Solvation Parameters. The results are compared to minimization in vacuo and in a 10 A water shell. The best solvent model as judged from the comparison to the crystal structure was an empirical solvation potential derived from free energies of transfer of amino-acid side-chain analogues from vapour to water. The use of this model causes, however, energy and gradient oscillations, which make it inapplicable with standard protocols of molecular dynamics simulations. The empirical solvation model which was found by other authors (von Freyberg et al., 1993, J. Mol. Biol. 233, 275-292) to give good results in the NMR structure refinement led to distortions of the ribonuclease native structure. The model based on statistical analysis of crystal structures did not perform better than minimization in vacuo.

[How was Polish phoniatrics born? (Part III. Jan Siestrzynski, Jozef Frank)].

The last years of Jan Siestrzyński (1788-1824), the first Polish phoniatrist, as a military physician at Końskie are presented. Siestrzyński was the author of a book of "Teorya i mechanizm mowy..." ("Theory and Mechanism of Speech..."), published in 1820. This book was the fundamental work of his life. The publications by Trompeo (1820), Borthwick (1836) and Brück (1856) dealing with similar problems dated later made Siestrzyński one of the first pioneers of European phoniatrists. Siestrzyński's book "O litografii" ("On litography" is briefly presented. The achievements of Józef Frank (1771-1842), who was a professor of Vilnius University, in popularization of the knowledge about speech disorders (especially in his book "Praxeos medicae universae praecepta" were pointed out).
