Voluntary effort has goal in sight.

The success of the Voluntary Effort can be credited to the movement's broad-based coalition and the commitment shown at the grass roots level. But much remains to be done, and the VE is gearing up to meet the challenge. In 1979, emphasis will be placed on: a greater role and involvement for hospital trustees, increased efforts by hospitals to develop better ways to inform physicians about the costs of tests and services, and the need to create an even greater awareness and commitment to the VE at the grass roots level.

Cost containment pressures make suppliers partners in productivity.

As demands for cost containment, productivity, and efficiency continue to be made of health care providers, more and more questions are being asked about the cost benefits and appropriateness of health care products and supplies. And, as hospitals continue to make their purchasing decisions in a regulated economy, it is likely that their decisions will alter the sales, marketing, and service responsibilities of hospital suppliers. In an effort to educate hospital suppliers to what lies ahead, Hospitals and Trustee magazines recently held the first National Symposium on the Hospital Market, the details of which are presented here.

AMA withdraws from CME accrediting body.

The AMA House of Delegates voted to withdraw from the Liaison Committee on Continuing Medical Education and return to its own accrediting system. The move ends a situation that has irritated the state associations, but it opens the possibility of two CME accrediting bodies. The AMA also modified its stand on chiropractic in an attempt to stop its mounting legal problems.

FTC allegations cause rift in AMA house.

The AMA attempted to close ranks on a number of potentially devisive issues at its interim meeting in December. Among the issues disputed were alleged AMA antitrust violations dealing with chiropractors and advertising policies and the association's position on national health insurance. Other medical staff issues put before the delegates included voluntary cost containment, due process, liability insurance requirements, and PSRO data confidentiality.

Commission report addresses future of public-general hospitals.

The Commission on Public-General Hospitals, which was established two years ago to assess current problems in the public hospital sector and to point to possible future solutions, recently released its final report. The basic findings and recommendations of that report and the future of public-general hospitals as seen through the eyes of the commission's chairman and director are presented herein.

Future physicians voice concern on social issues.

A deep concern for both medical and social problems directed the discussions at the annual meeting of the American Medical Student Association. The country's future physicians tackled such diverse issues as humanistic medicine, equal rights in medical school admissions, and improved patient care for the elderly.

AMA postpones debate on cost containment report.

"Aggressive moderation" to combat government's excess was the position suggested by John H. Budd, M.D., in his presidential address to the AMA's House of Delegates. Topics under discussion at this interim meeting included cost containment, primary responsibility for hospitalized patients, medical staff representation on hospital governing boards, PSROs, and the AMA's national health insurance proposal.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield president strives for 'grass roots' cooperation.

Walter J. McNerney, recently chosen president and chief executive of the newly consolidated Blue Cross and Blue Shield Associations, discusses future plans and goals of the organizations, emphasizing the positive effects the consolidation will have on insurance benefit programs and on the plans' relationships with hospitals and physicians.
