The use and image of mature adults in health care advertising (1954-1989).

Health care professionals who treat older (over 65) patients are influenced by the journals they read. Advertising directed at health care professionals during the period 1954 to 1989 was subjected to a content analysis. Advertising in health care journals was expected to reflect the demographic changes in American society with increasing numbers of older models and to present positive images of older people. Contrary to content analyses of magazine cartoons (Smith 1979) and general readership magazines (Bramlett-Solomon and Wilson 1989; Gantz, Gartenberg, and Rainbow 1980; Ursic, Ursic, and Ursic 1986), this study did find a significant use of older people in health care advertising and positive role portrayal.

The challenge of marketing home health care in the nineties.

This paper explores the recent growth and development of home health care services. Rising medical costs and technological and social changes have made home care a competitive alternative to hospitalization and other forms of institutionalization. Providers of home health care need to familiarize themselves with the demographic trends affecting their customer base. A strategic marketing orientation is suggested for future growth and profitability.

Improving intergenerational health care communication.

The relationship between health care providers and their older adult patients may suffer from miscommunication problems stemming from agist stereotyping. Stereotypes of older adults by younger adults may be revealed through patronizing speech--or elder-speak, which is the overaccommodation of speech interaction. Over- and underaccommodation strategies based on these stereotypes are often used by young health care providers when communicating with older adults. As the population ages and the demand for health care services increases, health care providers must improve their communicative effectiveness with their older patients. Attention to the individual needs of health care consumers, cognizance of age or role stereotyping, and proper training of health care providers would increase communicative effectiveness and enhance the patient-provider relationship.
