[Nursing care of elderly persons: reactions to the use of a security blanket to prevent falling out of bed].

This article presents the results of the first part of a survey aiming at assessing the chances for adoption and use of the safety blanket, a new device preventing the falls from the beds. In this part, the resarchers wanted to know how the caretakers reacted to the use of this material. Thirty four people with five beneficiaries among them, nine family members, fifteen contributors and five managers, interacting in the context of a care unit for elderly people of a hospital centre were interviewed. The data of the interviews were analysed according to a six step procedure: listening to the interviews and reading the descriptions; deriving the significant statements, analysing and reformulating the meaning of the statements; regrouping the signification units under more global themes; gathering the analysis results and describing exhaustively the studied phenomenon; validating the exhaustive description. As a whole, the reactions recorded were positive and indicate that the safety blanket has big chances to be adopted by the healthcare units.

[The interpreter in an intercultural clinical milieu].

The public's diversified language profile means that nursing practice must adjust to provide the same quality of care to all clients, no matter what language they speak. To improve quality and quantity of information exchanged in the nurse-client-interpreter triangle, the authors have investigated the type of information likely to be filtered and studied the various factors underlying the interpreter's choice to filter information. The authors also analyzed the values interpreters assign to information and the factors that form the background for filtering, including mistrust. The authors suggest adequately preparing interpreters; using interpreters' expertise; and developing an appropriate training program for intercultural interpreters to enable them to better function within health care institutions.

[Intercultural care].

Increased immigration into Canada over the last several years has created a country even more culturally diverse than before. And while multiculturalism is beneficial to Canadians, it can also present challenges. One of the main challenges is faced by health professionals daily: that of attempting to meet the various cultural needs of newly arrived immigrants. Essential to the task are relevant knowledge and appropriate attitudes and behavior. Toward these ends, the authors call for an increase in nursing research, and a focus on continuing education and nursing practice information--all relating specifically to multicultural issues.
