The role of specific emotions in children's responses to interparental conflict: a test of the model.

Mothers, fathers, and their 6-year-old children (N = 164) participated in a study testing key tenets of the specific emotions model of marital conflict. Parents reported their marital conflict strategies, were observed interacting with their children, and rated children's behavioral adjustment. Children reported their emotional reactions to specific interparental conflicts. Results support the specific emotions model. Children's behaviors mirrored the marital or parental behaviors of same-gender parents. Indirect effects of marital aggression through parental behavior were detected, and marital and parental behaviors interacted to predict girls' externalizing. Girls' anger, sadness, and fear increased with fathers' marital aggression. Fear and the anger by fear interaction predicted girls' internalizing. Fathers' marital aggression interacted with anger to predict externalizing and interacted with fear to predict internalizing behavior in boys.

Early sex differences in spatial skill.

This study investigated sex differences in young children's spatial skill. The authors developed a spatial transformation task, which showed a substantial male advantage by age 4 years 6 months. The size of this advantage was no more robust for rotation items than for translation items. This finding contrasts with studies of older children and adults, which report that sex differences are largest on mental rotation tasks. Comparable performance of boys and girls on a vocabulary task indicated that the male advantage on the spatial task was not attributable to an overall intellectual advantage of boys in the sample.

[Balneophotochemotherapy in disseminated granuloma annulare].

A 56-year-old female patient with generalized granuloma anulare was treated with bath-PUVA therapy with 8-methoxypsoralen. Her diabetes mellitus renal insufficiency excluded oral photochemotherapy. A series of 30 treatments resulted in complete disappearance of the lesions on the trunk and neck and significant improvement of those on the limbs. No side-effects were observed. Bath-PUVA therapy seems to have positive effects not only on epidermal, but also on dermal processes.

Imbalance of CD4+ lymphocyte subsets in patients with mixed connective tissue disease.

CD4+ (helper/inducer) T lymphocyte subsets were studied in the peripheral blood from patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) by double-labelling immunofluorescence. The proportion of CD4+CD45RA+ cells was higher (P less than 0.01) when compared with controls, whereas CD4+CD29+ cells were markedly diminished (P less than 0.001). CD4+CD29+ cells were lower than in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis who were studied in parallel. Upon stimulation with phytohaemagglutinin, CD4+ cells from MCTD patients showed a strong reactivity to acquire the CD29+ phenotype. Expression of high levels of CD29 and other adhesion molecules might lead to facilitated localization of CD4+ cells to inflamed tissue. It is suggested that an increased responsiveness of CD4+ cells to activation signals in vivo and accumulation of CD4+CD29+ cells at tissue sites could result in depletion of this cell subset in the peripheral blood of patients with MCTD.

[Expression of low-affinity Fc epsilon receptors on circulating monocytes in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases].

In patients with scleroderma, high proportions of circulating CD23+ monocytes could be detected by FACS analysis as compared with controls. Supernatants obtained from lymphocytes yielded high amounts of interleukin-4-(IL-4-)like activity. The results suggest that IL-4 contributes to monocyte activation in scleroderma. There were no correlations with serum IgE, or numbers of naive and memory-CD4+ lymphocytes.
