Subterahertz phonon dynamics in acoustic nanocavities.

We report a direct determination of the dynamic behavior of confined acoustic phonons in nanocavities by picosecond acoustics. We provide the broadband, high resolution transmission amplitude curve in the subterahertz range, and we give evidence of resonant transmission peaks in three successive stop bands, in quantitative agreement with acoustic simulations. We furthermore demonstrate transit times in the nanosecond range at the cavity peaks reflecting the strong confinement of resonant phonons within the cavity layer. On the other hand, picosecond transit times are measured in the stop band, shorter than in any of the constituting materials, a tunneling effect well known both in photonic crystals and in macroscopic phononic systems.

Parametric oscillation in vertical triple microcavities.

Optical parametric oscillation is a nonlinear process that enables coherent generation of 'signal' and 'idler' waves, shifted in frequency from the pump wave. Efficient parametric conversion is the paradigm for the generation of twin or entangled photons for quantum optics applications such as quantum cryptography, or for the generation of new frequencies in spectral domains not accessible by existing devices. Rapid development in the field of quantum information requires monolithic, alignment-free sources that enable efficient coupling into optical fibres and possibly electrical injection. During the past decade, much effort has been devoted to the development of integrated devices for quantum information and to the realization of all-semiconductor parametric oscillators. Nevertheless, at present optical parametric oscillators typically rely on nonlinear crystals placed into complex external cavities, and pumped by powerful external lasers. Long interaction lengths are typically required and the phase mismatch between the parametric waves propagating at different velocities results in poor parametric conversion efficiencies. Here we report the demonstration of parametric oscillation in a monolithic semiconductor triple microcavity with signal, pump and idler waves propagating along the vertical direction of the nanostructure. Alternatively, signal and idler beams can also be collected at finite angles, allowing the generation of entangled photon pairs. The pump threshold intensity is low enough to envisage the realization of an all-semiconductor electrically pumped micro-parametric oscillator.

Exciton-photon strong-coupling regime for a single quantum dot embedded in a microcavity.

We report on the observation of the strong-coupling regime between the excitonic transition of a single GaAs quantum dot and a discrete optical mode of a microdisk microcavity. Photoluminescence is performed at various temperatures to tune the quantum dot exciton with respect to the optical mode. At resonance, we observe a clear anticrossing behavior, signature of the strong-coupling regime. The vacuum Rabi splitting amounts to 400 microeV and is twice as large as the individual linewidths.

Electrical control of hole spin relaxation in charge tunable InAs/GaAs quantum dots.

We report on optical orientation of singly charged excitons (trions) in charge-tunable self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots. When the charge varies from 0 to -2, the trion photoluminescence of a single quantum dot shows up and under quasiresonant excitation gets progressively polarized from zero to approximately 100%. This behavior is interpreted as the electric control of the trion thermalization process, which subsequently acts on the hole-spin relaxation driven in nanosecond time scale by the anisotropic electron-hole exchange. This is supported by the excitation spectroscopy and time-resolved measurements of a quantum dot ensemble.

Determination of the local concentrations of Mn interstitials and antisite defects in GaMnAs.

We present a method for the determination of the local concentrations of interstitial and substitutional Mn atoms and As antisite defects in GaMnAs. The method relies on the sensitivity of the structure factors of weak reflections to the concentrations and locations of these minority constituents. High spatial resolution is obtained by combining structure factor measurement and x-ray analysis in a transmission electron microscope. We demonstrate the prevalence of interstitials with As nearest neighbors in as-grown layers.

Cranio-facial dysmorphism: experimental study in the mouse, clinical applications.

To obtain a better understanding of mandibulo-facial dysostosis and hemicraniofacial microsomia in man, the authors carried out a histologic and scanning electron microscope study of the facial malformations produced in mouse embryos by retinoic acid and methyl-triazene. The administration of 400 mg/kg 13 cis-retinoic acid (RA) to pregnant C57BL mice on day 9 of gestation produced anomalies of the cephalic extremity in the embryos resembling human mandibulo-facial dysostosis. The 64 embryos collected presented hypoplasia of the branchial arches or the snout in 79% of cases, auricular anomalies in 47% and ophthalmic anomalies in 12.5%. Fourteen NMRI mice on day 10.5 of gestation were treated with 1.5 mg (0.5 mg/kg) methyl-triazene (Methyl). The 126 embryos collected had developed a very high percentage of micromandibles and anomalies of both embryonic ears (94.6% to 100%). Finally, although the facial anomalies produced by retinoic acid resemble the human mandibulo-facial dysostosis syndrome, no correlation was found between hemicraniofacial microsomia and the administration of methyl-triazene.
