[A posttraumatic visual defect with late exacerbation associated with an aneurysm of the cervical internal carotid artery].

A posttraumatic visual deficit which worsened eleven weeks later, with sudden visual loss, is reported. The neuro-ophthalmologic examination was suggestive of central retina artery occlusion. The intra-arterial angiography revealed a traumatic pseudo-aneurysm of the ipsilateral high extracranial portion of the internal carotid artery. Based upon the clinical examination, the hypothesis of embolization has been considered the most probable mechanism, which is a rarely described etiopathogenesis. The clinical, pathogenic and diagnostic aspects of this situation are discussed. Finally, the authors describe the treatment, which consisted of the occlusion of the internal carotid artery with detachable latex balloons.

Effect of abnormal levels of serum components on antibiotic activity.

Antibiotic activity in serum from a model for type II diabetes was similar to that in normal sera or media containing cholesterol but lacking glucose, insulin, or both. The ratio of effects of broth plus obese-rat serum to effects of broth plus lean-rat serum supplemented with cholesterol approached or equaled 1.

Clindamycin and tetracycline as immunomodulating agents: an in vivo study.

The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of clindamycin and tetracycline, both intravenously administered, on antibody response to thymus-dependent antigen (PC-KLH) in BALB/c mice. The immunological parameters evaluated were: DPFC/spleen (direct plaque forming-cells), antibody secretion median rate (PC50), heterogeneity index (Hi), number of total splenic lymphocytes and cellular viability. The results showed that clindamycin (i.v.) increased the humoral response; 28 mg/kg was the dose that showed the greatest enhancement (+73%). The PC50 was not affected by clindamycin but Hi decreased at 28 mg/kg and increased at 2.8 mg/kg doses, although neither result was statistically significant. When tetracycline was given i.v., a slight decrease in the anti-PC DPFC number was observed. Although the PC50 was greater at 10 mg/kg (p less than 0.05), Hi was smaller at the 1 mg/kg dose (p less than 0.05).

Nervous function after right hemispherectomy.

A hemispherectomy was performed on a girl of 20 because of progressively uncontrollable seizures and behavioral changes resulting from major head trauma at the age of five. Psychomotor development up to this age had been normal. Today she shows little impairment in higher nervous function depending on the ablated hemisphere. Left-sided motor performance has improved and sensory deficit is scant. There is no hemianopia and the right eye visual field is enlarged. Dichotic listening shows left ear preference and no lesion effect. These findings suggest that significant and positive adaptation may occur in mature brain.
