[Erythrocyte-associated plasma proteins, a further aspect of erythrocyte function?].

The amount of plasma proteins associated to erythrocytes was determined or calculated by using three different techniques. Thus, there are 3.48 X 10(12) g of protein in a single erythrocyte or 94.12 g of protein respectively in the total of all erythrocytes in a healthy man with a body weight of 70 kg. The mass of plasma protein associated to erythrocytes will decrease in case of immunocomplex aggregates or otherwise denatured plasma proteins being fixed to the erythrocyte surface so that from a purely calculating point of view protein amounts on a scale of up to 46% of all plasma proteins may enter the free blood plasma under extreme conditions. In this, an immediately efficient possibility of compensation is seen by the authors in case of an acute consumption of blood proteins.

[The plasma protein film on rat erythrocytes after application of methylcholanthrene].

By means of a special procedure of preparing and colouring blood smears of adult male Wistar rats the plasma protein film (PPF) on erythrocytes was investigated before and after injecting 3 mg of 20-methylcholanthren per animal. It was as early as on the 14th day post injection that a significant alteration of PPF towards initial and control values could be found. Causes and possible consequences are discussed.

New aspects in the pathogenesis of infectious and tumor anaemia.

From new evidence of increased adhesion of immune complexes in the plasma protein film of erythrocytes, the pathogenesis of tumor anaemia and anaemia in chronic infections is suggested to be a mechanism of the early sequestration of the erythrocytes by erythrophagocytosis following their coating with immune complexes and denaturated immunoglobulins.

[Visual classification of erythrocytes in blood smears from normal subjects and patients].

Erythrocytes on specially prepared and coloured blood smears can be classified not only by idcture analysis but also by phase contrast microscopy. Parameters of change for the peripheral zone area and pallor area (phase contrast value PW and index of erythrocyte changes Ev-I) serve as classificators of visual technique. 449 blood smears of the same number of male and female grown-up persons, whose diagnosis was unknown at the time of evaluation, were used for evaluation. In 145 cases these were healthy test persons in clinical and laboratory respect (group I). 163 test persons were ill, but without any malignous neoplasias (group II), and in 141 patients an ensured malignous neoplasia could be found (group III). From those 308 test persons or patients respectively in group I + II 11 blood smears were falsely classified as positive (= 3.6%). In 5 from 141 cases in group III blood smears were falsely evaluated as negative (= 3.6%). The findings were statistically ensured by the t-test. Clinical parameters of evaluation gained with visual techniques of classification are in accordance with those gained with automatic picture analysis. The reasons for the good separating ability of PW and Ev-I are discussed. Visual techniques of classification are suitable for institutions of all grades of equipment.

[Picture series table for marker classification of the structure of erythrocyte marginal bands on specially prepared blood smears].

A phase-contrast microscopic procedure of evaluation, measurement and classification which can be simply performed on erythrocyte marginal zones (ERZ) of particularly prepared and coloured smears is described. Classification is made with the help of a classification table and a picture series table after measuring the erythrocyte marginal zones with an ocular measuring plate or with a measuring screw ocular respectively. The same preparing and colouring technique also enables erythrocyte marginal zones to be evaluated with an automatic picture analysis and with the scanning electron microscope. With the help of this technique, which can be applied in human erythrocytes as well as in those of dogs, rats and fish, changes of erythrocyte margin zones which may be caused by haematological, immunological and toxicological processes may be determined in quantity. The mode of action of this preparation technique is dealt with in the discussion.

[Simultaneous diagnostic studies of bacteriuria as related to method of urine collection].

In a direct comparative series were compared 204 functional, catheter, and mid-stream urines which were got simultaneously in patients with chronic pyelonephritis. In suprapubic vesical puncture 113 had a sterile urine, 91 showed a bacteriuria. After catheterisation 103 specimens were still sterile and 101 were bacterially infected. Of the mid-stream urines only 90 proved sterile, and 114 times pathogenic agents could be proved. While in males mid-stream urines achieved good results, in females a contamination was pretty frequent. Repeated investigations, estimation of the number of germs, and optimum taking essentially improve evidence. Though in females by means of catheterisation better bacteriological results may be achieved, in rare cases there is the danger of the invasion of germs. A clear judgment is possible, using the suprapubic vesical puncture.

[Technic for the presentation and evaluation of pathognostically significant erythrocyte changes].

In this paper is described in all details a method of staining and evaluation of blood smears which was originally proposed by Clara Fonti and was revised by the authors. With the help of this method characteristic changes of the erythrocytes can be demonstrated. The changes are depending on growth processes. Without exception they appear in an increased range in the growth of malignant tumours.

[Studies on the cancer-diagnostic evidence of erythrocyte changes during the course of neoplasm treatment].

In the present communication is reported on the results of further observations of the course of the index of the change of erythrocytes of 12 patients in connection with four clinical findings and parameters. The data got in these cases continue the previously presented reports on the results. In 9 out of 12 cases there is a correspondence with the indices of the change of erythrocytes and the clinical data belonging to this; in the remaining three cases the indices of the change of erythrocytes cause to presume a continuation of the malignant processes, though the other findings do not indicate this at present.
