Effects of dietary formalin on the health and testicular pathology of male Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix Japonica).

Male Japanese quail (n = 75) at 35 d of age were fed 20.0, 10.0, 5.0, 2.5 or 0 ml formalin (37% formaldehyde)/kg of their daily ration for 8 w. Quail fed 20.0 or 10.0 ml formalin/kg feed showed depression, decreased responsiveness, feed consumption, and body weights, and had vacuolation in the germinal epithelial layer of their seminiferous tubules. Formalin feeding at up to 5 ml/kg was associated with decreased weight of testes, and up to 2.5 ml/kg feed resulted in smaller diameter seminiferous tubules.

Surgical adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer: a comparison of CMF and CAF regimens.

Combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and fluorouracil (CMF) was compared with cyclophosphamide, adriamycin and fluorouracil (CAF) as adjuvant to modified radical mastectomy in primary operable breast cancer with positive axillary lymph nodes. After 18 months of study, treatment failure occurred in 10% patients in each group. The new clinical manifestations occurred locally in 75% and at distant site in 25% of relapsed patients. Long term chemotherapy produced an acceptable toxicity, thus allowing the administration of a high percentage of drug dosage. This study suggests that CMF and CAF regimens have comparable efficacy and toxicity in surgical adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Cholecystectomy with and without drainage.

Thirty patients underwent cholecystectomy without drainage, and 16 matched controls cholecystectomy with drainage. The wound infection rate was lower, hospital stay shorter and overall complication rate less in undrained patients. This study suggests that surgical drainage after uncomplicated cholecystectomy is unnecessary and may be unwise.
