[Comparative activity of dibekacin and several cephalosporins on Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

Dibekacin is a semisynthetic aminonglycoside derivative of kanamicin B, with highly activity against most gram-positive and gramnegative bacteria. It is also active against bacteria relatively resistant to other antibiotics. Since Pseudomonas aeruginosa seems to be the most common strain recent clinical isolated, we compared the in vitro activity of dibekacin with other eigh cephalosporins against 579 clinical isolates of sensitive and gentamicin-carbenicillin resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results indicate that dibekacin was more active than any of the other antibiotics tested against all the organisms tested, including carbenicillin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

[Fosfomycin. I. Antimicrobial action in vitro].

The results obtained from the test of the in vitro activity of Fosfomycin by a concentration of 104 bacteria/ml and by Nutrient Broth with 5% defibrinated blood, have shown that the drug has a capacity of action on both Gram-negative and Gram-positive germs, also on beta-lactamase producing bacteria. Fosfomycin is a bactericidal antibiotic. infact the M.I.C. values are simjlar to M.B.C. values.

[Effects of subinhibiting concentrations of fosfomycin on the ultrastructure of E. coli K 126].

In the present paper we have evaluated the ultrastructural effects of fosfomycin on E. coli K 126, after different exposure times with subinhibitory concentrations (1/2 MIC). After 3 hrs, the antibiotic acts on bacterial morphology. Population shows some elongated forms and lysed cells with abnormal divisions. At 6 hrs, on the other hand, the bacteria appear intact, though they present cytoplasmic disorganization and cell wall particularly undulated. In the presence of fosfomycin, the cells tend to clump together.

[Urinary infection. I. Comparative in vitro activities of several antibiotic drugs against Gram-negative bacteria].

The in vitro activity of imipenem against 3,496 Gram-negative strains isolated from 4,505 positive urocultures was determined. The effectiveness of imipenem was then compared with that of ampicillin, amoxycillin + clavulanic acid, ticarcillin, piperacillin, aztreonam, cefalotin , ceftazidime, cefoxitin, cefotaxime, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, amikacin, gentamicin, tobramycin, trimethoprim + sulfamethoxazole. Imipenem was active against all isolates, including Pseudomonas spp. known to account for a large portion of nosocomial infections and resistance to antibacterial drugs.

[Urinary infection. II. Comparative in vitro activities of several antibiotic drugs against Gram-positive bacteria].

In this study the in vitro susceptibility of 1,009 Gram-positive strains isolated from 4,505 positive urocultures was evaluated towards the following chemotherapeutic agents: oxacillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, imipenem, cefalotin, cefotaxime, amikacin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, pefloxacin, clindamycin, erythromycin, vancomycin, rifampicin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol. The results indicate that vancomycin is the most active antibiotic against all the strains, including enterococci often involved in serious infections caused by invasive techniques.

[Candida albicans and intestinal involvement].

In the present study we compared different media for diagnosis of Candida albicans in the faeces to know the importance of the nonascosporic yeasts in alvine disorder. The first property was to find which field, among those known in literature, was more suitable in laboratory practice, for identification of the fungi. Among the cultural tested fields, the best results were obtained by Pagano Levin Base, adding 2-3-5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride and Neomicina. The most frequently found yeast in the patient's faeces with alvine disorders resulted C. albicans. Therefore, patients having correlation C. albicans-alvine disorders were submitted to a treatment with Nystatin. Most cases verified the regularization of the alvine disorder and the same time the disappearance of the yeast.

[In vitro activity of several antibiotics on pathogenic micro-organisms isolated from the lower respiratory tract].

Lower respiratory tract infections are clinically important, because of their high incidence, as well as the significant morbidity they cause. Hence the great importance to diagnose the etiology of these infections and treat the patient with selective therapy. In this study 367 bacteria isolated from lower respiratory tract were identified (253 Gram negative and 114 Gram positive) and tested towards augmentin, ceftriaxone, lomefloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and erythromycin. The in vitro activity of such antibiotics against the clinical isolates was compared.

[Epidemiologic study of infectious diarrhea in infants].

The authors considered the epidemiological and microbiological aspects of the infectious diarrhea caused by bacteria, protozoan and viruses observed at the Infantile Hospital, Alessandria, and at the Malpighi Diagnostic Center, Chivasso, Turin, over a period of 14 months. Furthermore, a greater interest has been given to the role of Clostridium difficile diarrhea, since hospitalized patients are often predisposed to the development of this disease due to the antimicrobial prophylaxis or therapy.
