[Magnetic resonance tomography in the diagnosis of surgical diseases].

The authors analyse the first experience in the use of magnetic resonance tomography (MP-tomography) in the diagnosis of some surgical diseases. MR-tomography of the mammary gland (257 patients), thymus (55 patients), adrenals (41 patients), and hypophysis (18 patients) was conducted. The results of the examination were compared with the findings of other diagnostic methods and verified intraoperatively and histologically. The authors claim that the high informativeness of MR-tomography, its noninvasiveness, the absence of a radiation load, and the possibility of repeating the examination many times in three mutually-perpendicular planes distinguish the method favorably and dictate the necessity of its further study in clinical medicine.

[X-ray morphologic characteristics of microcalcination in benign processes and cancer of the breast].

Mammographic and morphologic examination was carried out in 136 females bearing microcalcinates in breast tissue. Morphologic examination identified benign tumors (mostly fibrous cysts) in 72.1% and cancer (mostly ductal and lobular carcinoma in situ or initial signs of invasion) in 27.9% of cases. Calcinates occurred mainly in the epithelium and incipient cancer complexes. The analysis of the data showed shape, structure and distinctness of contours of calcinates to be instrumental in differentiating between malignant and benign lesions.

[Small focal lesions of the breast: a clinico-morphological analysis].

Morphological and mammographic study of small (less than 1 cm) focal mammary gland lesions of 170 women revealed foci of typical epithelium proliferation of the ducts and lobules, fibrosing adenosis, small duct papillomas and fibroadenoma, intraductal and ductal carcinoma in situ, sometimes with small invasion foci, infiltrating carcinoma, infiltrating lobular carcinoma. Peculiarities of small focal lesion morphology determine the mammographic picture. Analysis of nodular shadows on the mammogram gives as a rule a possibility to differentiate between benign conditions (focal proliferation of the epithelium, fibroadenoma), early carcinoma (intraductal and lobular in situ, sometimes with small foci of invasion) and infiltrating carcinoma. Calcareous deposits in both benign lesions and carcinomas do not differ mammographically. Morphogenetic link was revealed between foci of epithelium proliferation (benign displasia), intraductal and lobular carcinoma in situ and infiltrating carcinoma. Among 65 cases of non-palpable carcinoma, 31 (47.7%) were classified as early carcinoma and 34 (52.3%) as infiltrating carcinoma with a relatively low histological degree of malignancy. In both groups a good postoperative survival was observed.

[Thomsen antigen in human normal and tumor tissues].

A method of specific adsorption of appropriate antibodies from human serum was used to examine tumors of 15 patients with cancer and of 6 subjects with benign neoplasms. Tissues of cancerous tumors were found to contain Thomsen's antigen. Normal tissues of the same organ taken from the same patient did not contain the antigen nor was it contained by benign tumors. The titer of specific antibodies to Thomsen's antigen in the sera of patients suffering from cancer was considerably reduced as compared to that detected in normal subjects or in patients with benign tumors.

[Diagnosis and treatment of nonpalpable breast tumors].

191 patients with nonpalpable breast tumors were admitted to the Clinic of Surgery of the I. M. Sechenov 1st Medical Institute. The tumors were detected during a mass screening survey; none of the patients had any complaints. Examination and palpation failed to detect any pathologic changes in 60.2% of females, while in 39.8%, bilateral mastopathia cystica was found. All patients underwent sectoral resection with interstitial marking of tumor. The marking procedure is described. Morphological examination confirmed X-ray diagnosis in 83% of cases. Most tumors were localized, while incipient invasive features were revealed in 58.3%. Morphologically, such tumors may be considered early cancer. When diagnosis of malignant tumor was confirmed by histological examination, radical mastectomy after the method of Patey was performed (68.9%). The end results of treatment are presented. Early diagnosis and effective therapy of breast cancer are determined by cooperation of X-ray, surgery and pathology department staff.

[Search for the heterogenetic Forssman antigen in human breast tumor tissue].

The complement fixation test was used to examine 80 human mammary tumors for the presence of heterogeneous Forssman antigen: 62 cases of cancers of different malignancy (adenocarcinoma, solid tumors), 13 cases of fibroadenomas and 5 cases of fibrocystic mastopathies. Subject to study was also normal tissue of the mammary gland. Forssman antigen was not found in all the tumors tested, as it was not detected in tissues of the normal mammary gland. Therefore the process of transformation of normal cells to tumor ones is not accompanied by the occurrence in them of heterogenous Forssman antigen.
