[The effect of alcohol abuse on the health status of women and their children].

A total of 250 women, working in the same enterprise in similar conditions, with similar communal conditions were examined. The data of questionnaires and case histories evidence that 5% of women virtually never used alcohol, 85% of women used alcohol in reasonable amounts, 10% of women abused alcohol. The screening methods that were effective in examinations of men suffering from chronic alcoholism were found useless in a population of working women. That is why adequate screening methods are to be developed for the assessment of the involvement of female organs and systems. The onset of menarche is delayed in women who abuse alcohol in the period of the menstrual function development. The findings of this research are in line with the previously published data on disorders of the reproductive function in women abusing alcohol and of fetal development in case of an antenatal exposure to ethanol.

[Pathomorphological estimation of models of mouse Candida infection induced by intravenous or intracerebral contamination].

Candida infection caused by intravenous or intracerebral contamination with a clinical strain of C. albicans 1755 was studied comparatively on 230 albino mice. The contamination doses ranged from 10(6) to 4 . 10(7) CFU/mouse. The developing infection could be characterized as Candida encephalomeningitis complicated by generalized candidiasis. Both the contamination routes mainly led to affections of the brain, kidneys and heart. The same distribution pattern of the pathogen was observed when the culture killed by heating was administered. The intracerebral route had advantages in chemotherapeutic studies since it induced less severe and more prolonged infection. Acute purulent inflammation of the brain and kidneys developing immediately after the contamination by days 5 to 6 was replaced by a granulomatous reaction and fibroplastic processes. Decreased acute inflammation along with changes in the nature of the pathogen vegetation and morphotinctorial properties in the affected organs can be used as a criterion of the antimycotic agent efficacy. A system for estimating pathomorphological changes in the tissues and the pathogen state is described and its use is illustrated with application of amphotericin B, mycoheptin and 5-phthorcytosine.

[Comparative evaluation of the embryotoxic effect of various antibiotics].

A broad spectrum of antibacterial antibiotics used in treatment of purulent inflammatory diseases in pregnant women was studied experimentally. The antibiotics included oxacillin, fusidin, kanamycin, gentamicin, cefuroxime, cephalothin and tetracycline. The embryotoxic action of the antibiotics was investigated on embryos of rats cultivated in vitro. The mediated antenatal action of tetracycline and gentamicin was studied during various gestation terms before implantation (days 1 to 7), during organogenesis (days 8 to 14) and during fetal growth++ (days 14 to 20). Prior to the delivery the data on the intrauterine death, development of the fetoplacental unit and the presence of external and internal anomalies were considered. The placenta, liver and kidneys of the fetus were examined morphologically. It was shown that tetracycline and gentamicin had embryotoxic properties as evidenced by a higher intrauterine death rate and congenital anomalies in individual fetuses.

[Effect of cefuroxime on embryonic and fetal development in an experiment].

The direct and indirect effects of cefuroxime on the embryo and fetus were studied in vitro and in vivo at different gestation times. The placenta, liver and kidneys of the mother and fetus were investigated morphologically. It was shown that in a dose of 250 mg/kg the antibiotic did not induce disorders in the fetus development. The histological examination of the fetus placenta and liver revealed no changes as compared to the controls. However, in the renal tubules of the mother and fetus, pathological lesions in the form of the cytoplasm granular degeneration and nucleus swelling, lysis and necrosis were observed. These lesions were of a dose-dependent character. The possible nephrotoxic effect of cefuroxime prevents its use as a drug of choice in treatment of gestation pyelonephritis.

[Transplacental passage of gentamicin and its effect on the fetus].

The time course of gentamicin transplacental penetration was studied in women during labor. It was found that the transplacental penetration of the antibiotic was high and its levels in the fetus blood were only slightly lower than those in the mother blood. The concentration of the antibiotic in the placenta and amniotic fluid was also rather high. The experiments with rats showed that the levels of gentamicin penetration into the fetus depended on the pregnancy period: at earlier periods (13 days) the level of gentamicin transplacental penetration was 5.8 times higher than that at later periods (21 days). In high doses gentamicin produced an embryotoxic effect, therefore in treatment of pregnant women with gentamicin its therapeutic doses should not be exceeded.
