Computer control of pH and DO in a laboratory fermenter using a neural network technique.

In this contribution, the advantages of the artificial neural network approach to the identification and control of a laboratory-scale biochemical reactor are demonstrated. It is very important to be able to maintain the levels of two process variables, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, over the course of fermentation in biosystems control. A PC-supported, fully automated, multi-task control system has been designed and built by the authors. Forward and inverse neural process models are used to identify and control both the pH and the DO concentration in a fermenter containing a Saccharomyces cerevisiae based-culture. The models are trained off-line, using a modified back-propagation algorithm based on conjugate gradients. The inverse neural controller is augmented by a new adaptive term that results in a system with robust performance. Experimental results have confirmed that the regulatory and tracking performances of the control system proposed are good.

[Quality of life in asthmatics].

UNLABELLED: Despite the availability of effective treatments asthma is increasing in both prevalence and severity specially in the well developed countries. As a consequence of this a large part of population is affected and the disease has a significant burden to the society. Evaluation of therapeutic effectiveness can be determined by measuring the quality of life. OBJECTIVE: As asthma has a major impact on the patients everyday life, we examined the quality of life of adult asthmatics with a disease specific questionniare (St. George's Respiratory questionniare SGRQ) and a visual analogue scale (VAS). We wanted to find out if the quality of life scores are significant with the results of clinical tests. METHODS: We examined 321 adult asthmatic patients. Patients were randomly selected. The influence of three factors age, sex, and FEV1 on quality of life was investigated. The data was analysed with user SPSS system. RESULTS: The results of the visuala analog scale were the following in female asthmatics 61.38%, in males 63.86%, the VAS results were the following according to the disease severity: mild intermittant 76%, mild 69%, moderate 60%, sever 49%. From the St. George questionniare three component scores were calculated: symptom (304.15 +/- 11.01), activity (580.71 +/- 19.57), impact (842.18 +/- 31.53) and the total score (1727.05 +/- 57.24). When we examined the different scores according to the age we found significant differences with the activity, impact and total score, but could not find significant differences with the symptom scores. The relationship between spirometry and quality of life is not as strong (coefficient of correlation: 0.37) but the majority of patients have high SGRQ scores even those patients whose FEV1 lies within the normal range. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with asthma it is common that one might see improvement in the FEV1 and yet not see an improvement in patients feelings or functioning. It was interesting to see that in spite of their bad conditions patients do accept the chronic nature of asthma, a degree of impairment and regard that as normal, limits in their everyday life, as they adjust their activity so that they can avoid the asthma attacks.

[Clinical symptoms of Alzheimer disease].

Data of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease and checked out in the special unit named Memory Clinic functioning from 1992 in the National Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology are summarized. Age average of the 60 patients was 63 years, the first symptoms of the disease had appeared in 57 p.c. before the age of 65, so the classical presenile form of the ailment is represented too in the material. Predominance of multifocal cortical function disturbances in the symptomatology is characteristic, association of the depression is outstandingly frequent. The atypical features, or those characteristic in diseases of cerebrovascular origin are not infrequently seen (headache, dizziness, slight symptoms of pyramidal lesions). The absence of epileptic seizures It was interesting even in considering the data of the literature too. The main points of clinical diagnostics and differential diagnostics are demonstrated with the aid of case reports. The author's material is the first Hungarian publication in the topics of clinical symptoms of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease that had been investigated with up-to-date methods. Occurrence of the disease of very great frequency could be supposed to occur at general practitioners, the importance of differential diagnostics and planning of the complex longlasting therapy is extremely great.

[Memory clinic: a new special unit, basic principles and first experiences of its function].

Memory Clinic is a special unit of the National Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Hungary since January, 1992. Authors describe the methods of clinical investigation and the frames of therapy. In the first year 315 patients were examined, that underlines the authority of establishing such a special centre. A high proportion of the patients were in their active working period (age average were 55 years in the outpatient, and 56 in hospitalized patients). In the etiologic spectrum the organic cerebral lesions were the most frequent, but were not the only reasons. Depression was a very frequently observed associated symptom. The function of the new unit has interdisciplinary characteristics: modern organic examinations joined with psychotherapy-oriented therapeutic regime. There seems to have a chance for collaboration with other establishing Memory Clinics in the world.

[Computer survey of the rehabilitation data and social conditions of children with motor disabilities in Györ-Sopron and Baranya Counties].

To investigate the occurrence of motor disability a pilot study was carried out in the total children's population of Györ-Sopron county and in 57% of the children of Baranya county by computer-based questionnaires. The data of the 492 motor handicapped children were analysed by 55 computer programs. These programs are constructed for the analysis of the somatic and mental health, schooling, rehabilitation possibilities, social background, care of these children and their further needs for specialists and institutions. This procedure is suitable for national and longitudinal data collection and for the complex registration of the status of these children.

[Reality orientation training: a method of group therapy of patients with dementia. Problems and possibilities of evaluating the effect of treatment of patients with various forms of dementia].

Authors describe a method called reality orientation training, a possibility of group treatment for patients suffering from dementia. They summarize the main statements of the literature and give account of their own battery for diagnostic classification and treatment. They outline the practical difficulties in the measurement of the effectivity of the treatment employed in demented patients.
