INTRODUCTION: Suicide behavior is an important health problem. Several works found have reported that the majority of completed suicides visited to the general practitioner in previous days. METHOD: 219 suicide attempts attended in a General Hospital were asked about their previous contact with health system. RESULTS: The third part of the patients have visited the general practitioner in the previous month. 60% of the patients with personal antecedents of psychiatric diseases have visited to mental services in the previous month. CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to find risk suicide markers that allow identifying these patients in primary attention. The increment of the consultation periodicity is proposed as efficient risk suicide marker.
BACKGROUND: Criminological studies have been specially influenced by those social factors relationated with drug dependence. Data from Criminology and Law insist on relationship between social factor and criminological events, but not defining the direction of this correlation. OBJECTS: We present data about criminological situation of an heroin addict patients sample evaluated by consultation-liasion psychiatry in Ramón y Cajal hospital in Madrid. We study legal, social and clinical variables and their relationship. METHOD: We use descriptive analysis and logistic regression to study social, legal and clinical variables of a 411 patients sample, using clinical report protocol. CONCLUSIONS: Those patients affected by HIV-1 have higher criminality index, with lower social, economic and educational level than those not affected. These results suggest an interdependence between delinquency and marginality with an early beginning of both.
BACKGROUND: Paroxetine has become an effectiveness treatment in anxiety disorders in adults. Despite the fact that this is an especially prevalent psychiatrist disorder in children and adolescents, there are very few studies in this population. This study examines the effectiveness of paroxetine in children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. METHODOLOGY: Fifteen children and adolescents with ICD-criteria for anxiety disorder were selected. Anxiety measurement was taken with STAI scale and was filled out before treatment and 6 months later (mean). We have used descriptive parameters and t Student test for the analysis of dependent samples. Statistic work was done with SPSS 8.0. RESULTS: On first testing, the mean score for State Factor was 41.8 (ds: 5.9) and on second after treatment- it was 24.66 (ds: 9.8). Trait Factor was 43.53 (ds: 8.27) on first testing and 25 (ds: 8.91) on second. These differences in mean scores for both State and Trait factors were significant (alpha=0.05, p= 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Our results support the hypothesis of clinical improvement at Anxiety Disorders in children and adolescent using Paroxetine. It seems logical to continue the study increasing sample size and evaluation time.
INTRODUCTION: Substance dependence, especially heroin dependence, has become one of the most prevalent psychiatric diseases during recent years. In spite of the numerous related publications, very few articles offer a heroin users profile based on an extensive sample and a broad range of variables of opiate dependent patients in Spain, thus limiting the possibility of generalizing the different findings published. OBJECTIVE: Present a description of an opiate dependence user profile, based on the analysis of a broad range of variables in an extensive population sample. Methodology. An observational, retrospective study, with treatment group (n=1177) and no control group was established. Descriptive and survival techniques were used to analyse different variables (sociodemographic data, medical and psychiatric history, drug consumption record, risk behavior in regards to HIV infection, previous dehabituations, legal situation, treatment carried out for addiction, etc.). RESULTS: We describe a heroine dependent user pattern that coincides in the different variables with the data offered by previous reviews in Spain. CONCLUSIONS: The profile defined can be considered as representative of opiate users in Spain, and it may be used as a reference for future articles.
INTRODUCTION: Addiction characteristics as prognostic factors in opiate dependence treatment were studied. Thus, several factors related to previous opiate consumption record were considered (current heroin route, amount of heroin, onset age of heroin consumption, time of heroin consumption, other drug consumption record). OBJECTIVE: To establish the prognostic value of addiction characteristics in a naltrexone program for opiate dependence. METHODS: To achieve this objective, an observational, retrospective study was designed with a design of a treatment group with no control group. 945 subjects diagnosed of opiate dependence who were consecutively hospitalized voluntarily in the naltrexone program of the Hospital Ramon y Cajal of Madrid during 1991-1995 form a part of the study population. Descriptive and survival techniques were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Previous intravenous heroin route, chronic heroin consumption record, onset age of heroin use younger than 17 or older than 25, and other drug consumption especially benzodiazepine and also cocaine provide a prognostic value for a worse outcome. High quantities of heroin consumption also tend to be associated with a poorer evolution. CONCLUSIONS: Several addiction characteristics (current previous route, onset age of heroin consumption, quantity of heroin consumption, time of heroin consumption, other drug consumption) have a prognostic value for treatment evolution. Further studies are necessary to provide a more complete knowledge of addiction characteristics as prognosis factors in opiate dependence treatment.
