[Idiopathic calcinosis of the scrotum. Cytohistologic diagnosis in biopsy and puncture samples].

OBJECTIVE: To report an uncommon case of idiopathic calcinosis of the scrotum. METHODS/RESULTS: A case of idiopathic scrotal calcinosis in a 50-year-old male who presented with multiple hard masses in the scrotum is described. Cytological (fine needle aspiration) and histological (biopsy and resection) analyses of these lesions were performed. CONCLUSIONS: Although the etiopathogenesis of scrotal calcinosis remains unknown, the involvement of a dystropic mechanism has recently been described. The usefulness of fine needle aspiration, a method that has gradually been included in the study of testicular pathology, is underscored.

[Post-traumatic arterial priapism resolved using supraselective embolization].

Presentation of a new case of high flow priapism in a patient with recent background of perineal traumatism. Diagnosis, already inferred through anamnesis, was later suspected from the results of blood gasometry in cavernous bodies, and eventually confirmed by Eco-Doppler. A revision of the related literature revealed a total of 20 patients in whom supraselective embolization has been used as the therapeutical approach, Bucrylate being used in only two of them. Finally, a few considerations are contributed on the therapeutical management of these patients and the relevance of a correct diagnosis of the two distinct groups of priapism, since they differ considerably in terms of treatment.

[Symptoms of anxiety and depression in liver-transplant patients].

INTRODUCTION: We analyzed the influence of two variables (place of hospitalization of the patients and mental health of relatives) on anxiety and depression symptoms in liver-transplant patients. METHODS: The subject groups were made up of 48 liver-transplant patients and 48 close relatives. The tests applied were a psychosocial questionnaire and the following instruments: The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, The Leeds Scales for the Self-Assessment of Anxiety and Depression and Social Support Scale. RESULTS: The liver-transplant patients showed more symptoms of depression when they were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and more symptoms of anxiety in the post-ICU phase when their close relatives were more depressed in that phase, as a result of receiving little social support. CONCLUSIONS: The place of hospitalization of the patients and the mental health of relatives influenced symptoms of anxiety and depression in liver-transplant patients.

[Statistics of urological infections in the hospital environment].

A review is made of the clinical histories of 1,821 patients admitted to our Department for treatment over a three-year-period and on the basis of the data compiled, the doctors have made a statistical study of urinary infections, by determining the type of germ, etiology of the process and level of sensitivity to the different antibiotics and chemiotherapeutic drugs and by analysing, at the same time, the inference between the different parameters considered. Of the results presented, they stress that the practical erradication of E. coli as an infecting agent in our medium, is significant, as well as the probable existence of an epidemiological cycle lasting for periods of twenty one months although this has still to be confirmed by means of longer chronological series.

[Atypical scrotal leiomyoma. A case report].

A case of intrascrotal atypical leiomyoma is reported. This lesion is extremely rare and usually misdiagnosed. Microscopically, contain bizarre and pleomorphic tumor cells, as well as showed immunohistochemical evidence of smooth muscle differentiation. An important microscopic criterion in the distinction with other entity, as the leiomyosarcoma, is the number of mitotic figures, scarce in the atypical leiomyoma and high in the smooth muscle tumours malignant.
