ADP-ribosyl transferase and NAD glycohydrolase activities in rat liver mitochondria.

ADP-ribosyl transferase and NAD glycohydrolase activities have been estimated in mitochondria in mitoplasts as well as in other submitochondrial fractions. A high activity of these two enzymes was present in mitoplasts as compared to the outer membrane preparation or intermembrane compartment. Inhibitor studies provide strong evidence for the involvement of ADP-ribosyl transferase in the process of ADP-ribosylation of mitochondrial proteins. When NAD glycohydrolase was blocked by nicotinamide or 3-aminobenzamide, the incorporation of ADP-ribose into mitochondrial proteins still occurs. ADP-ribosyl transferase activity could also be detected when NAD glycohydrolase was separated by hydroxylapatite chromatography. The protein-linked ADP-ribose moiety appears to be an oligomer in mitochondria.

Purification of non-synaptic and synaptic mitochondria and plasma membranes from rat brain by a rapid Percoll gradient procedure.

A method is described for the isolation and purification of non-synaptic and synaptic mitochondria and plasma membranes. The procedure involved differential centrifugation and successively a Ficoll gradient followed by a Percoll one. The method is rapid and maintains constant osmotic conditions. The Percoll-purified fractions show a lower density than those prepared by the conventional methods. The fractions were identified and characterized by enzyme markers and electron microscopy. The method will be useful for routine preparations rendering a good degree of homogeneity and purity.

[Leprosy revealed by oedema of the hands].

BACKGROUND: We reported a case of lepromatous leprosy in a Tunisian woman revealed by a potentially misleading clinical picture involving isolated infiltration of the hands. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 37 year-old woman consulted in October 2000 for bilateral edema of the hands associated with paraesthesia that had been present for one month. Screening for Hansen's bacilli confirmed the diagnosis of multibacillary leprosy. Daily therapy with triple anti-leprosy treatment was initiated. DISCUSSION: The occurrence of edema, which is classically described as a symptom of a reactional state, can occur during the course of leprosy. Where it is a presenting symptom, this unusual heralding sign can be a source of diagnostic error and delay.

[Giant sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the vulva].

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous gland hyperplasia is an epithelial tumour with sebaceous differentiation. Genital involvement is rare. In this paper, we report a new case of sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the vulva. CASE REPORT: A 27 year-old woman presented multiple polypoid lesions of the lower third of left labium majus. The lesions were soft to the touch, measured 5 cm in length and were painless. The cutaneous biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the vulva. Surgical excision was performed in two separate procedures and was successful. DISCUSSION: This case was unusual in terms of the site, the clinical appearance and the weeping seen due to the high concentration of hyperplasic sebaceous glands.

[Tracheal atresia. A case report].

The tracheal agenesis is a rare malformation of the respiratory tract. It must be suspected in any new born with respiratory distress, absence of crying, and difficulty or impossibility of intubation. Since the initial case report by Payne in 1900, 87 cases have been reported in the literature. The authors report one case of tracheal agenesis out of 2500 autopsy realised in the laboratory.

[Antenatal diagnosis and contribution of fetopathologic examination in the management of omphalocele].

The omphalocele is an average coelosomie, frequency of which is estimated at 1/5000 births. We confront diagnosis antenatal with the exam foetopathologic in purpose of 41 cases of omphalocele brought together over a period going from January 1, 1991 till December, 2000 in the unity of foetopathologie from the CMNT. The frequency of omphaloceles is 4.88% of the children malformed and of 1.64% of the set (group) of the performed an autopsy children. An association malformative was found in 85.4% of cases and a karyotype typical aberration trisomie 13.18 and 21 was identified in 17% of cases. The preview of the children bearers of this deformation is especially bound (connected) to the existence and to the gravity of associated abnormalities. The omphalocele required a multidisciplinary making coverage intervernir obstetriciens, néonatologistes, surgeons pediatre and foetopathologistes.

[Value of early oral feeding after a cesarean section].

In order to evaluate the advantages and possible disadvantages of early oral realimentation following cesarean section, the authors undertook a randomized prospective study involving 100 patients divided into 2 groups: A, in which oral feeding remained forbidden until the spontaneous restoration of intestinal function; and B, in which oral feeding was restarted as early as 6 hours postoperatively. The results of the study indicate the usefulness of early realimentation after cesarean section which, in particular, enabled a 4 hour decrease in the time before which flatus was passed and a 5-fold decrease in gastrointestinal problems.
