Pubertal stage was assessed in 453 Egyptian boys aged from nine to 17 years. Weights and albumin concentrations were measured and parasites identified from stool samples. The mean age to reach each stage of puberty was significantly delayed in the presence of low albumin levels and parasites. The magnitude of the delay was greater for genital stage 2 than for later stages. Weight was also lower in children with reduced albumin concentration or parasites. Among children of the same age, weight and albumin were positively correlated (P less than 0.001), suggesting that albumin status is involved in the timing of puberty.
Industrialization started in Egypt on a large scale only 20 a ago. This process resulted in a shift of a large proportion of the agricultural workers to industrial work. The health insurance for industrial workers is enforced by law for certain industrial groups. Although preplacement and periodic medical examinations should be provided for the insured groups, they are not yet properly carried out and are deficient both qualitatively and quantitatively. For a reliable view of the occupational health situation an epidemiologic approach is a must. As a start, a computer-assisted pilot plan has been developed using data of one of the periodic medical examinations for a group of miners in Egypt.
Lymphocyte subpopulations ("active' T cells, total T cells, and B cells), leukocyte migration, lymphocyte transformation, complements (CH50, C3, and C4), and immune complexes in serum and cerebrospinal fluid were studied in 23 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. The percentage of active T cells was normal. The number of patients with positive migration inhibitory response to phytoyhemagglutinin was lower than controls, corresponding to the diminished percentage of total T cells in patients. C1q binding (immune complex formation) was found in the sera of 10 patients.

A 24 h preincubation of human peripheral lymphocytes (PBL) in the presence of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or concanavalin A (Con. A) renders them suppressive for the response of untreated cells to PHA, Con. A, candidin and allogeneic cells. However, cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) show no suppression.

In the present work antigenization with somatic and metabolic antigens of adult Schistosoma mansoni worms, their cercariae or eggs has been tried. The study of the immunoglobulin patterns in infected and vaccinated non infected mice showed increase in IgG in all animals, increase in IgM only in the infected and IgA was frequently increased in mice that received metabolic or egg antigens. As regards the degree of resistance of vaccinated animals to S. mansoni infection, 2 groups gave prominent results. 1st the group vaccinated with Schistosoma mansonmetabolic worm antigen in which we got: -- Reduction in the worm load. -- Delayed ovulation and reduction in the number of ova/24 hr stools and/g of liver tissue. -- The histopathological picture of the liver was the best. 2nd the group vaccinated with egg antigen: Although it showed delayed ovulation and reduction in the ova count per 4 hr stools and/g liver tissue, yet the histopathological picture was the worst showing the largest granulomata.

The mean ages of attainment of successive stages of puberty were estimated in a cross-sectional sample of 453 Egyptian schoolboys from a semi-urban area of Cairo, ranging in age from 9 to 17 years. The stages of puberty were as defined by Tanner (1962). The mean age of onset of puberty (stage 2) was 11.1 years, assessed either by genitalia or by pubic hair. Stage 5 occurred at 16.2 years, again both for genitalia and pubic hair. The time interval between these ages, 5.1 years, was 2 years longer than for British or Chinese boys. There was a highly significant effect of social class on the mean ages of attainment, and the heights and weights of the boys were also related to social class, the class 1 boys being taller and heavier than Tanner's British boys.
This study was initiated to investigate the long term effect of exposure to organophosphorus pesticides (O.P), with consideration to bilharziasis (an endemic parasitic disease in Egypt, usually associated with liver fibrosis). Serum levels of choline esterase (Ch E), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (Alk. Ph.) and proteins were estimated among 100 (O.P.) sprayers with various duration of exposure (3 to 15 years) and among 60 controls. O.P. sprayers showed significantly higher, SGPT and Alk. Ph. and lower Ch E and serum proteins than the controls. Among sprayers, duration of exposure to O.P. was significantly correlated with their levels of Ch E, SGPT, and Alk. Ph. but not with serum proteins. Compared to other parameters, SGPT seems to be a good indicator of the hepatic effect of long term exposure to O.P. Bilharzial infection did not modify the effect of O.P. pesticides on the above mentioned parameters. Ch E of smoker sprayers was significantly less than that of non smokers. This was attributed to increased absorbtion of O.P. during smoking at work places.
Fifty-six male and 14 female leprosy patients, aged 11-62, were studied for cell-mediated immunity (CMI) and histocompatibility antigens. Healthy blood donors were used as normal controls. All patients were receiving antileprosy drugs. T and B cells were detected by E and EAC rosette formation technics, and the leukocyte migration test (LMT) was done in the presence of PHA. HLA antigens were defined by a modified N.I.H. lymphocytotoxicity test in order to type 48 patients and 100 controls. There was a significant difference (p less than 0.01) in the number of T cells between tuberculoid and lepromatous forms of the disease as compared to normal controls. We did not observe any differences in EAC rosette cells. It should be noted that the migration index is significantly higher in controls than in leprosy patients for PHA. There are no significant differences in the distribution of the A locus antigens between leprosy patients and controls, although a higher percentage of A-11 was obtained in leprosy patients. A slight elevation of B5 antigen was observed but these results are preliminary and our information regarding the B locus is incomplete. Thus, it is difficult to establish any precise relationship between HLA antigen and leprosy at this stage.
