[Possible vascular factor in idiopathic detachment of the retina (author's transl)].

The possible influence of a vascular factor in idiopathic detachment of the retina was studied by comparing the frequency of hypertension and hyperlipidemia in groups of myopic and non-myopic subjects within the age group 50 to 65 years. Hypertension was present in 37.1 p. cent and hyperlipidemia in 60 p. cent of the non-myopic subjects, against 9.7 p. cent and 33.33 p. cent respectively in the myopic subjects. These results, together with the fact that there was a later age of onset in the non-myopic group, suggest that a vascular factor could be of etiological significance in idiopathic detachment of the retina in non-myopic subjects.

[Isotopic indicators in the diagnosis of malignant pleurisies (author's transl)].

The tracers that are used in thoracic pathology have an elective tumoural affinity, present such a special reaction towards pleural effusions that we were led to study Bleomycin labelled with Cobalt 57 in 34 cases of pleurisy of various etiologies. The hyperfixation, circumscribed to the effusion in all these cases, presented a double problem : of radiobiological risk and of diagnostic significance. We tried to solve the last problem by means of a precise protocol applied to 16 cases, quantifying comparatively the specific radio-activity of pleural fluid and serum and studying the evolution of the pleural serous gradient, after injection of 2 mCi of labelled Bleomycin in 16 patients with suspected malignant pleurisy. From this limited study, it appeared that the sero-pleural gradient of the tracer, 24 hours after injection, was very high, above 5 and up to 15 in 7 malignant pleurisies out of 8; between 2 and 4 in others. It was sometimes below 5 and less in effusions, non malignant or doubtful. This gradient decreased very rapidly to reach 0 on the fourth day, except in recurring chronic effusions. Pending the confirmation of results, after a prolonged experiment, this protocol appeared valuable for diagnostic and physiopathological reasons.

[The frequency of alterations of the lipid and hydrocarbon levels in retinal detachment].

The biological lipid levels and hyperglycaemia measured in patients of varying ages with retinal detachment have shown that:--in 59.7% there is a hyperlipaemia or hyperlipoproteinaemia. This is more usually a hyperpre-beta-lipoproteinaemia (37.1%);--in 32% a disturbance of lipid metabolism was associated with a disturbance of glucose metabolism: diabetes or a pre-diabetic state;--49% of patients affected with hyperlipidaemia present with a clinical vascular condition;--42% of all the patients present with a clinical vascular condition. The numbers are considerable and they show the frequency of atherogenic factors in retinal detachment.

[Plasmapheresis and acute attacks of uveitis].

Our study concerns the effects of plasma exchange in acute attacks of posterior or total chronic uveitis. The treatment undertaken in 10 patients consisted of 8 plasma exchanges in a 2 weeks period, associated with a corticosteroid and immunosuppressive therapy. Immediately after the plasma exchanges, there was a significant improvement in visual acuity and a decrease in inflammatory activity in most patients (70%). Plasma exchange seems to be an interesting adjuvant in the difficult treatment of some uveitis.
