Transfer of Chernobyl fall-out caesium radioisotopes in the cow food chain.

From February to October 1987 samples of milk, grass and other components of the cow diet were regularly collected and analyzed for their radiocaesium contents in 26 sampling stations in a north-eastern region of Italy (Friuli-Venezia Giulia). In this paper we report the feed-to-milk transfer factors for radiocaesium obtained in 13 farms of this region of Italy.

Cesium-137 urinary excretion by northeastern (Pordenone) Italian people following the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

To estimate the radiological consequences in humans due to the Chernobyl nuclear accident (5 May 1986), we have determined both the 137Cs concentration in food and the 137Cs daily urinary excretion on 198 residents of the Pordenone area. The resulting experimental data have been compared with those estimated from the International Commission on Radiological Protection Publication 10A model (ICRP 1971) using a suitable dietary intake, and they were found to be in reasonable agreement.

Reed-Sternberg cells and their cell microenvironment in Hodgkin's disease with reference to macrophage-histiocytes and interdigitating reticulum cells.

Fifty-eight paraffin-embedded lymph node biopsies from patients with Hodgkin's disease (36 nodular sclerosis, 14 mixed cellularity, five lymphocyte depletion, and three lymphocyte predominance) were immunostained with a panel of monoclonal (anti-Leu-M1, antileukocyte common antigen) and polyclonal (to lysozyme, alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 1-antichymotrypsin, and S-100 protein) antibodies by using the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique. Both the immunostaining features of the Reed-Sternberg (R-S) cells and their variants, and the numbers of immunostained accompanying cells morphologically corresponding to macrophage-histiocytes (M-H) and to interdigitating reticulum cells (IRC) were analyzed. Variable numbers of R-S cells and their variants were positive for Leu-M1 in 83% of the cases, for alpha 1-antitrypsin in 40%, for alpha 1-antichymotrypsin in 30%, and for leukocyte common antigen in 3.4%; they were constantly negative for lysozyme and S-100 protein. Whereas the average numbers of accompanying cells immunostained for Leu-M1 were very low, the numbers of S-100-positive IRC were relatively high in all the Hodgkin's subtypes. The average numbers of M-H were lower (P less than 0.1 for lysozyme; P less than 0.001 for alpha 1-antichymotrypsin) in the nodular sclerosis than in the other pooled subtypes. In the nodular sclerosis subtype, however, R-S cells and their variants that stained positive for Leu-M1 appeared to express more frequently the lineage markers of M-H (alpha 1-antitrypsin and/or alpha 1-antichymotrypsin). These data appear to suggest that there is not an apparent qualitative correspondence between the immunostaining features of the cellular microenvironment composed of M-H and IRC and the features of the R-S cells.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in the elderly. A retrospective clinicopathologic study of 50 patients.

The pathologic and clinical findings of 50 patients aged 65 or older (median, 71.5 years) with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) are reported. These patients formed 27% of all cases of NHL seen in a single institution over a 7-year period. Forty patients presented with nodal and 10 with extranodal NHL. According to the Ann Arbor system, 20 were clinical and/or pathologic Stages I and II, and 30 were Stages III and IV; of the 10 patients presenting with extranodal NHL, 8 were Stages I and II. Histologically, 84% of the cases were of the intermediate and high-grade groups according to the Working Formulation; diffuse histiocytic was the most frequent histotype (34%) according to the Rappaport classification. The pattern was diffuse in 94% of the cases. Five patients received no treatment; treatments were conservative (monochemotherapy and/or local radiotherapy) in 19 patients and aggressive (polychemotherapy and/or extended-field radiotherapy) in 26. Four patients of the latter group died of toxicity; 22 patients died of lymphoma and 13 of other causes; the other 11 (22%) patients are still alive. The overall median survival was 2.2 years. A significantly better survival was observed in patients with Stages I and II (P less than 0.025) and in those with intermediate grade (P less than 0.05) when compared with patients having Stages III and IV and high-grade histology, respectively. Apparently, no significant difference both in response and survival was found between the groups of patients which arbitrarily underwent conservative or aggressive treatments on the basis of their general conditions. Randomized clinical trials should be designed in order to draw more significant conclusions on the correct management of elderly patients with NHL.

[Hemodynamic effects of the acute administration of captopril in refractory chronic congestive heart failure. Study of 13 patients and review of the literature].

We examined the acute hemodynamic response to Captopril, an oral converting enzyme inhibitor, in 13 patients with chronic congestive heart failure (CHF) refractory to conventional therapy, including other vasodilators. Captopril was administered in four increasing doses of 25, 50, 100 and 150 mg. The cardiac index (Cl) increased significantly (average +22%) in patients with high plasma renin activity (PRA). Pulmonary artery diastolic pressure (PADP) considerably decreased in all patients. A moderate decrease in systemic arterial pressure (SAP) was also observed. The heart rate (HR) did not change. Peak effect occurred 90 minutes after administration for the Cl, 30 to 120 minutes for PADP and SAP. The drug was well tolerated. This study confirms the acute beneficial hemodynamic effects of Captopril in patients with CHF refractory to conventional therapy. The possible mechanisms are discussed and the literature is reviewed.

[Comparative evaluation of 3 miniaturized systems (API 20E, Enterotube II, Sensititre AP60) commonly used in clinical microbiology laboratories].

API 20E, Enterotube II, Sensititre AP60 have been evaluated. Some biochemical tests (lysine, ornithine, VP, H2S, adonitol , arabinose, citrate) have revealed significative differences among three systems. The total correlations about bacterial identifications have been very similar. The repetibility of identifications of strains isolated from clinical specimens has been 98.7% for Enterotube and API 20E, 95.5% for Sensititre . The biochemical tests have revealed repetibility greater than or equal to 94%, citrate repetibility instead has been 91%.

[Precursors of atherosclerosis in childhood: Pordenone study. Transverse and longitudinal study of arterial blood pressure (BP) in a group of boys and adolescents (author's transl)].

Mean systolic BP values gradually and significantly increase from the infancy to the adolescence. On the contrary, diastolic BP does not change significantly. No sex differences were found for mean values of both systolic and diastolic BP. The results of the longitudinal study (two years follow-up) have shown, for the two sexes, a significant increase in the systolic BP values, which parallels the ponderal growth. In particular, the greatest increment of the values was observed in the triennium 12-14 year, that is around the puberty.

[Study of the precursors of atherosclerosis in childhood: the Pordenone study. Longitudinal behaviour of total cholesterol and serum triglycerides in school children (author's transl)].

In a total number of approximately 500 school-children, belonging to a suburban area around Pordenone (Northern Italy), aged 6-9-12-15, we have performed a two years follow-up on serum TC and TG. As for serum TC, a progressive decrease of mean TC levels at the two rescreenings was observed. We cannot explain such trend, unless we admit that some dietary modification has been introduced in the families, although no dietary advices were given. However the observed decrease of the TC levels, makes clear that a single serum TC determination is not sufficient in order to define the lipid profile of a given subject. Unlike TC, serum TG tend to increase with the age. The "longitudinal" behavior of TC and TG is similar for both males and females.

[Epidemiology of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus in the school population of Pordenone Province].

During the winter months of 1976-1977, our group carried out an epidemiological study in the school population aged 7 years and 10 years respectively, living in the towns of Pasiano (pop. 6,389) and Zoppola (pop. 7,383) in the province of Pordenone. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of individuals in the school-age group having group A beta haemolitic streptococcus in the pharynx. The results of the study showed a high incidence of children with a positive throat swad. Of the 284 scholars examined, 107 (45.7% of the entire population examined) were carriers, in the pharynx, of group A beta haemolytic streptococcus.
