Bacterial strains were isolated on the basis of their ability to proliferate in a minimal medium containing one of a series of lignin-related compounds as the sole carbon and energy source. These included the aromatic monomers guaiacol, vanillic and coumaric acids, a dimer and a trimer possessing the arylglycerol-beta-aryl ether linkage, anisoin, and both the ether-soluble and -insoluble fractions of kraft lignin. The growth of the strains on each of these compounds was measured. The results showed that the metabolic properties of the strains varied according to the structure of the carbon sources used for their selection. Spectrophotometric tracings of the culture medium during the log phase of growth of one of the strains on the beta-O-4 dimer revealed decomposition with the release of guaiacol.

A starch-gel electrophoretic study of 2 peripheral blood lymphocyte enzymes, phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and adenylate kinase (AK), was performed in 25 donor-recipient allogenic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) pairs. A different isoenzymatic pattern between donor and recipient for PGM, AK or both, was observed in 11 of these 25 pairs. From these 11 cases, an identical donor isoenzyme pattern was observed in 10 cases between 24 and 85 days (mean 41.8, SD 22.08) after BM infusion confirming engraftment, whereas in the remaining 1 the demonstration could not be substantiated due to early death. The present study demonstrates that, in addition to other cell markers, the simultaneous study of PGM and AK isoenzymes allows confirmation of BM engraftment in about 45% of cases, much earlier than is possible by means of red cell antigen analysis. Moreover, it is a simple, relatively inexpensive and rapid laboratory tool for a better characterization of the established chimera.

Nephron tubular epithelium possesses the capacity of adaptation to any salt ingestion condition. The mechanism of adaptation is due in part to an increase in the activity of Na(+):K(+):ATPase at the basolateral membrane. The goal of the present study was to analyze the long-term regulation of the Na(+):K(+):ATPase alpha(1)-subunit mRNA expression during changes in NaCl metabolism. Male Wistar rats given a normal, high, or low NaCl diet, and intraperitoneal administration of the loop diuretic furosemide from 12 h to 7 days were studied. Rats were kept in metabolic cages 4 days before and throughout the study to determine daily urinary electrolyte excretion and osmolarity. At the end of each experimental period, creatinine clearance and serum electrolytes were also measured. Total RNA was extracted from each individual cortex or outer medulla and from pooled inner medullas using the guanidine/cesium chloride method. Na(+):K(+):ATPase alpha(1)-subunit mRNA expression was assessed by nonradioactive dot-blot analysis. Experimental maneuvers were well tolerated and all groups developed the appropriate renal response to each experimental condition. Urinary sodium excretion was significantly higher in rats administered a high sodium diet or furosemide and lower in rats treated with a low sodium diet after 7 days of treatment. Glomerular filtration rate was similar among all groups. However, the level of expression of the Na(+):K(+):ATPase alpha(1)-subunit did not change in any model. Nephron adaptation to the modification in NaCl intake or furosemide administration over 7 days did not include changes in Na(+):K(+):ATPase alpha(1)-subunit mRNA levels.

INTRODUCTION: The rates of incidence and prevalence of patients with sores in hospital are indicators of nursing care quality. The aim of this study is to evaluate such prevalence in the last two years (1997-1998), comparing the patients with sores, the evaluation of the risk of developing sores, and the factors associated with their development. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A transversal study was made, in which the subjects under study were all of the patients hospitalised in the Hospital of Navarra on the day set for the study. The study gathers the variables of sex, age, unit of hospitalisation, date of admission and date of the study, presence and number of sores, their development in or outside the hospital, evaluation of risk on admission and evaluation of risk on the day of the study (according to the modified Braden scale). RESULTS: The prevalence of patients with sores was 8.9 per 100 patients hospitalised in 1997 and 5.1 in 1998. The difference is statistically significant with a value of p=0.025. Age, the classification of patients within those of risk, and the time of hospital stay are factors related to the development of sores. CONCLUSIONS: The factors associated with the development of sores detected in the study lead us to be more attentive in our vigilance of the patients that show them. The follow up of the prevalence and incidence of bedsores in hospitals is an instrument that makes it possible to continue improving understanding, prevention and treatment of such lesions in patients.
