[Tracheal mucous membrane in patients with laryngeal cancer. Examinations using scanning electron microscopy].

We examined by use of scanning microscopy the healthy looking tracheal mucous membrane 25 mm from the cancer lesions. The small pieces were taken during the initial routine tracheostomy before the laryngectomy. In 21 examined patients there was one woman. One patient did not smoke tobacco and did not drink alcohol. 19 were farmers and workers. Two had other professions. The normal tracheal mucous membranes were found in 6 patients, 2 of them were farm workers. In the remaining group there were abnormal appearance of cilia or complete lack of them, being replaced by the plain epithelium layer. In one case after cobalt therapy the mucous membrane was completely destroyed.

Postnatal development of the vascular pattern in the rat telencephalic pia-arachnoid. A SEM study.

The postnatal changes in arrangement of the vascular system of the pia-arachnoid of rats are described based on scanning electron microscopy of microcorrosion casts and transmission electron microscopy. At birth, the distal arteries and veins are embedded in a dense plexiform network of immature capillaries. Arteries and veins are interconnected by many small capillary anastomoses. The trunks are located above the pial plexus. The underlying plexiform vessels provide the matrix for the formation of additional collateral and precortical segments during further development. During the first postnatal week, the distal pial arteries and veins become visible as separate channels and emerge from the subjacent capillary plexus. The pattern of anastomosing arterial rings is now clearly visible. The pial arterial tree can be subdivided into conductive, collateral, and precortical distributive segments, according to Jokelainen et al. (1982). Subsequently, passive expansion of the vascular system takes place during the period of rapid brain growth. In young adults the majority of the formerly closed arterial rings are interrupted, possibly by regression of single collateral arterial segments (Fig. 6). The dense venous capillary plexus of the pia is maintained during the first eight days in spite of marked brain growth. The process of reduction of this capillary plexus starts at the arterial side and proceeds from proximal to distal segments of the veins during the second and third week. The capillary segments, which provide anastomosis between arterial and venous vessels, disappear at the same time as the regression of the dense venous capillary network.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Morphology of arteries, veins, and capillaries in cancer of the larynx: scanning electron-microscopical study on microcorrosion casts.

Morphology of blood vessels in cancer of the larynx, which as other solid tumors has great neoangiogenic abilities, was studied on microcorrosion casts in SEM. Most evident changes of the endothelial patterns were seen on the casts of capillaries, venules, and veins. Capillaries, especially the newly formed, are the most numerous constituent of the vascular bed in all zones of cancer of the larynx. These vessels exhibit great morphological differentiation varying from the single, blind-ended pipes via relatively long hairpin loops spirally twisted in the long axis, to strongly spiralled and convoluted loops, resembling pseudoglomeruli. The newly formed capillaries deriving predominantly from the host's capillaries, venules, and veins have a embryonal character. It seems reasonable to presume that the neoangiogenesis process triggered by active influence of the tumor angiogenesis factor, is in principle, a repetition of the mechanism of the embryonal angiogenesis.

Vascular arrangement in the oral mucosa of Rana esculenta. Scanning electron microscopy of corrosion casts.

Corrosion casts of the blood vessels in the oral mucosa of Rana esculenta were examined by the scanning electron microscope. Special attention was paid to the palatine capillaries characterized by numerous blind diverticula. Microanatomy and topography of these peculiar vessels suggests their involvement in gas exchange. The diverticula of the capillaries visible in the casts in form of nodules of various shape and size were examined in detail.

Scanning electron microscopical study of tracheal vascularization in guinea pig.

In view of a considerable increase of the tracheal injuries brought about by intubation, further detailed information on microcirculation of the trachea is needed. For this purpose, the normal microvascularization of the guinea pig trachea was investigated in microcorrosion casts viewed in a scanning electron microscope. The trachea is supplied by longitudinal vascular bundles running at both sides of the organ, including both longitudinal tracheoesophageal arteries and veins. They are the source of a segmental vascularization of the trachea. Due to numerous arteriovenous anastomoses and anastomoses occurring within respective arterious and venous vascular systems, a constant blood flow within submucous capillary plexus and the tracheal wall is provided. A characteristic feature of tracheal vascularization is a very rich, dense network of veins, which form well-developed plexuses, particularly in tracheal segments covered by skeletal cartilages.

Scanning electron microscopic studies on blood vessels in cancer of the larynx.

The injection replication method was used in a study of the vascular system in cancer of the larynx. Following maceration, clean microcorrosion casts of the blood vessels of larynx cancer were examined in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effective filling of the whole vasculature, including its finest capillaries, makes it possible to obtain really three-dimensional pictures of the tumor blood vessels in the SEM. These SEM pictures allow a more detailed and profound analysis of the behavior and arrangement of blood vessels in three basic, angioarchitectonically differentiated zones of the tumor.

SEM study of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle in the cat.

Corrosion casts of the complete vascular network of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle in the cat brain were studied in SEM using the injection-replication method. The villi of this plexus are located only on its supero-anterior and infero-posterior parts, being most densely packed in the former region, close to the interventricular foramen. The capillaries of the villi display small nodular thickenings, which suggest the presence of small, sinusoidal dilatations. The main vessel supplying the plexus with blood is the anterior choroidal artery. The plexus is also characterized by a particularly rich venous network, which is drained by a prominent (main) choroid vein. The vascular organization of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle in cat is compared to that of the corresponding plexuses in other mammals.

Blood vessels in the tongue of the kitten: scanning electron microscopy of microcorrosion casts.

The subepithelial blood vessels of the dorsal surface of the tongue in young kittens has been studied by scanning electron microscopy of micro-corrosion casts. These vessels entwine the vallate papillae distributed in the pharyngeal part of the tongue, form hairpin loops in association with the small conical papillae along the sides and at the tip of the tongue and establish regularly distributed subpapillary conglomerations over almost its entire oral part. These conglomerations lie directly on veins. Small arterioles reach the vessels surrounding the individual subpapillary conglomerations. By contrast with the arrangement of the superficial vascular bed in the tongue of the dog and some other mammals, no anastomoses between arteries and veins were observed in the kitten between the vessels which supply and drain the subepidermal capillaries.

Scanning electron microscopy of microcorrosion casts of the vascular bed in the skin of the spotted salamander, Salamandra salamandra L.

Microcorrosion casts of blood vessels in the skin of the spotted salamander, Salamandra salamandra L., were studied using scanning eletron microscopy. The investigated vessels include a subepidermal network of respiratory capillaries and the vessels of poison glands. A hypothesis is proposed, according to which both types of vascular beds possess a common origin. Probable factors involved in the differentiation of the primary netword of the subepidermal vessels in larvae are indicated and speculation concerning the supposed mosaic type of circulation in the capillaries of the subepidermal respiratory bed is presented.

Light and scanning microscopy of the taste organs and vascularization of the tongue of the spotted salamander, Salamandra salamandra (L.).

The mucosa of the spotted salamander tongue and its taste organs were investigated by means of light and scanning electron microscopy. The most striking feature of the salamander tongue is an almost complete lack of papillae which are replaced by long, radially disposed folds with linear arrays of taste organs along their ridges. In respect of morphology, the taste organs of the salamander occupy an intermediate position between the taste buds of Urodela and taste discs of Salientia. Scanning electron microscopic examination of microcorrosion casts of the blood vessels of the tongue has revealed that the structure of subepidermal capillary network reflects the topography of the tongue surface and the distribution of its taste organs. In the core regions of the folds the capillary loops accompanying gustatory receptors empty via their shorter, descending arms into the draining vessels, the initial segments of which retain a course parallel to that of the folds. In the few fungiform papillae the capillary vessels form single loops whose distal ends come to lie in the vicinity of taste discs.

Model of skin vascularization in Rana esculenta L.: scanning electron microscopy of microcorrosion casts.

Microcorrosion casts of blood vessels in the skin of Rana esculenta L. were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy with particular reference to the subepidermal network of respiratory capillaries. Due to the fact that arteries and veins lie in the deeper layers of the stratum spongiosum of the corium, the respiratory vessels form a morphologically homogeneous network. Functionally, however, this network is subdivided into small areas with a centripetal direction of blood flow. The deep capillary net, situated at the base of the stratum compactum of the corium, is not so dense as the respiratory network and does not directly communicate with it. Alveolar glands of the skin have no effect on the distribution of capillaries in the two networks.

Scanning electron microscopy of the cochlear vasculature.

Studies on the vascularization of the cochlea with conventional injection methods that use light microscopy have failed in viewing both the overall three-dimensional picture, as well as the detailed construction of the cochlea vascular blood vessels. This basic shortcoming can be omitted by the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on corrosion casts, which only presently has been introduced. The use of a commercial resin (Mercox) as an injected medium, followed by application of macerating fluids, provides clean and completely filled casts of the cochlea vascular system, which can then be inspected by SEM. This method not only confirms the general findings about cochlea vascularization but gives the opportunity to view the overall picture, as well as the detailed pattern of the intricate cochlear capillary beds.

[Importance of EEG studies in the assessment of hearing and equilibrium disorders of central origin].

In a group of 52 patients with hearing and equilibrium disturbances of central origin EEG was done. The obtained EEG findings were correlated with: a) main clinical manifestations of the type of function loss or stimulation, and b) disturbances of behavioural perception, that is specific signs of disturbed perception and non-specific extraperceptive signs. Disturbed hearing, independently of the side of lesion, was accompanied by focal disturbances of electrogenesis in left temporal leads. Vertigo was associated as a rule with focal pathological changes in parieto-occipital leads bilaterally, prevailing in the right-side leads. The pattern of labyrinthine (static) behavioural disturbances was, as a rule, more rich than that of hearing behaviour disturbances. The differences observed in clinical pattern were explained as due to differences in the neurophysiological properties of the temporal and parieto-occipital cortex. Conclusions were based on the hypothesis of minimal brain damage and dipolar organization of the pathological bioelectric function of the brain. Electroencephalography provides objective data which can be used in the diagnosis of diseases affecting the organs of hearing and equilibrium.
