Cytotoxicity versus antibacterial activity of some antiseptics in vitro.

Through the development of new techniques for bacterial growth and isolation, obligate anaerobes have been shown to be more prevalent than previously thought in the pathogenesis of periapical and pulpal diseases. A follow-up study was conducted to examine the germicidal effect of 0.05% NaOCl, 10 mg/ml metronidazole and supernatant of Ca (OH)2 (0.025 ml) on four anaerobic microorganisms commonly found in root canals, and to compare the toxicity of these substances on cell cultures. In vitro testing revealed that 0.05% NaOCl and Ca (OH)2 were both equally effective on these anaerobes. Also, metronidazole was found to be germicidally effective against Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Bacteroides oralis and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, but ineffective against Veillonella alcalescens. Furthermore, it was found that NaOCl and Ca (OH)2 had a very destructive effect on cell cultures compared with their antimicrobial effect, whereas metronidazole was less toxic among the agents tested.

[Oral bacterial flora of dogs].

To be used as a model in dental and medical research, an animal must fulfil experimental needs and information on the composition and variation of its oral flora must be available. Only limited data are available on the indigenous oral bacterial flora of dogs. In this research, a total of 100 isolates from the same sites of the oral cavities of dogs were identified. Only 17 different species were isolated. The predominant species of the total cultivable flora were Staphylococcus (coagulase +, and - types), and E. coli species. This is thought to be occurred as a result of constant licking habit of these animals.

[In vivo adhesion of Streptococcus mutans on amalgam and composite restorative materials].

The adherence of cariogenic S. mutans, to dental restorative materials in vitro has been reported previously. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of S. mutans, to colonize on metallic and nonmetallic composite restorative materials in vivo. A total of 30 plaque samples from patients with metallic restorations, and 30 plaque samples from the patients with nonmetallic restorations obtained. This study indicates that, composite restorative materials and unpolished surfaces tend to be more highly colonized by S. mutans, than metallic and polished surfaces.

[The levels of alpha-1-antitrypsin in the periapical cyst lesions].

Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) is a serum protease inhibitor, with a well established role in bodily defense against destructive inflammatory disease. In order to investigate the role of this protease inhibitor in the periapical lesions, 13 patients were investigated. Serum alpha-1-antitrypsin levels of 13 patients were 871.8 +/- 73.6 mg/dl whereas 296.6 +/- 32.6 mg/dl in the control group. Difference was important between both groups (P less than 0.01). Alpha-1-antitrypsin levels were 40.2 +/- 13.7 mg/dl in the cyst fluid. Although the alpha-1-antitrypsin levels in the patients serum were elevated, it was not found in sufficient levels in the cyst fluid. This results suggest that, the regulation of proteolytic activity afforded by AAT, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of periapical lesions.

[Effects of various enzymes on Candida albicans activity on denture base materials].

In this study, the effects of various enzymes to remove C. Albicans, contamined on to the different kinds of specimens prepared from 5 different denture base materials were investigated. All kinds of enzymes investigated were found to be effective, but both protase and the pure lipase were observed to be more effective than the others by their zero colonies calculated. It was decided that pepsin, trypsin and pancreatic amylase have less effects on C. Albicans than the others.

[Antibacterial properties of two conventional and two high copper dental amalgams].

Two conventional and two high copper dental amalgams (Non gamma 2) has been investigated for their antibacterial properties. The high copper dental amalgam, Ana 2000 possessed a very small range of antibacterial propertie against Lac. acidophilus and Staph. epidermidis, while other amalgams found to have no antibacterial activity against the ten tested microorganism strains.

[Antibacterial properties of some adhesive agents that are used to prevent marginal leakage].

In this research, antibacterial effects of two cavity varnishes (Copalite and Espe), two bonding agents (Scotchbond and Adaptabond), and Delton fissure sealent, on the various microorganisms that are predominant in the oral bacterial flora, has been investigated invitro. The maximum antibacterial effect upon all the tested microorganisms has been found with Scotchbond. The other agents listed in decreasing order of effectiveness were, Copalite, Espe varnish and Adaptabond. Delton fissur sealent found to have the least measurable antimicrobial action.

[Chemical sterilization of gutta-percha cones with sodium hypochlorite, sporocidin and PVP-I].

This study was undertaken to determine the chairside disinfection of gutta-percha cones prior to obturation of the root canal, during the endodontic therapy. Several contaminated gutta-percha cones are immersed in 2.5% aqueous sodium hypochlorite, Sporocidin (2% glutaraldehyde) and 10% polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-I) solutions for 10, 20 and 30 seconds. A 10 second exposure of contaminated gutta-percha cones to the 2.5% aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution found to be the most effective in the surface disinfecting of points in this study.

[Effects of storage conditions on the rate of disappearance of bacterial contamination of toothbrushes].

This investigation was made to show the effects of storage conditions on the decrease rate of bacterial contamination of tooth brushes. Tooth brushes were soaked into the broth cultures of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, and then kept either in closed containers or in free circulating room air. The germ counts were made 24, 48 and 72 hours later and found that the decreases were much more rapid in brushes who kept in free air.
